Funny last sentence

We had a lot of sections of 3 lanes in Norfolk and the attrition rate was gruesome.

Three lanes = recipe for death.
Too many aggressive people on the roads nowadays who bully their way through.
A schoolmate of mine died on one of these roads years back. The road was the old one passing the DVLA in Swansea. It was the main route in pre M4 days. Now a much quieter road as the M4 is parallel and close to it.

Dad used to say "one lane for coming, one lane for going and one for death": he impressed on me the need to be so very careful and overtake as normal, not when there was a car closer than was safe in the other lane.

I suppose they were a good idea when traffic was very light, I hope they have all been eliminated now.

I can think of several, though most of them have double white lines along one lane, so overtaking should only happen from one direction.
However there is a section of A40 heading out of Cheltenham, just after Dowdeswell reservoir, where overtaking is allowed from either direction.

We have a three lane stretch nearby on a series of bends and inclines.

Up the hill is two lanes, but it takes a brave driver to take that first blind bend in lane two. You can never be certain that there won't be a moron in the centre lane coming down the hill.

There have been many fatalities on that stretch.

Dangerous 3 lane roads!

A303 Ilminster Bypass and A417 from M5 Junction 11a upto the Air Balloon roundabout.

The latter is particularly horrendous, being uphill with a long left hand curve.
scared

But with double white lines against the downhill lane Simon.
The more worrying bit is after the Air Balloon roundabout where people can't slow down to the 40 mph limit past the Golden Hart pub in Nettleton Bottom. 2 killed there last week.
Mind you, sometimes I wonder whether people actually look - heading towards the Air Balloon one day, a car turning right into the Golden Hart pulled across me. Fortunately I was only doing 35, but had the big van's tyres squealing on the point of lock up so as not to hit them. Could just feel the ABS starting to work. Fortunately nothing on my tail!

The Illminster by-pass used to be two very wide lanes, which encouraged suicidal overtaking, at least the new layout, with clear white lines is better.

As to the A417, it has double white lines "protecting" the overtaking lane. Mostly the trucks are crawling up the hill, cars overtaking. I agree with Graham, bit past the Golden Heart is plain dangerous, there used to be Camera's there, but no longer. Obviously not enough revenue...
I don't like Average Speed Check cameras , but to be honest on that short section it would help keep people to 40.
