Hi Cole. I believe that the recesses are empty on all cars ex factory.

It is a long time since I looked but I have a feeling that if you take a torch and shine on the base of each recess there is an imprint for such as First Aid Kit etc.

I have never asked the dealership if there are 'extra's' from MMC which fit these recesses?

Yes, the one recess shows a cross indentation not unlike a Swiss cross. I'm guessing that.
what about tools...didn't the car come with a standard set of spanners, allens, space for a spare plug etc.? Last week I cruised TM and saw a post about a guy who built an aluminum box for tools and installed it under the hood (right side)against the firewall. I'm thinking of a "roll-up" kit with some essentials and using velcro straps to secure it under the hood. I'm afraid the styrofoam that holds the jack is too flimsy to hold a couple kilos of tools for the road. thx

Hi Cole,

The "standard" kit is a jack, jack winding handle and either a cheap octagonal spanner, a hammer or a wheel brace depending on the wheels your car is equipped with. No other tools I'm afraid. It is possible that the dealer may have thrown in a little knurled bar to tighten up the side screens but that would normally go on a key ring or in the Glove box. If your car is not fitted with an under bonnet tool box (I don't think it is, but I am not that familiar with 4/4's) then someone like the estimable Peter Mulberry could help out.
Alternatively a common approach to tool storage is to do away with the plastic tool tray and cut into the rear plywood cover to hold Tupperware containers or even custom made metal boxes. I think there may be some threads on that here, if not try eMog or MogTalk

As Brian V says, you won't get a lot of tools as standard issue from the Factory

My 2000 4/4 Zetec DOES have a small tool compartment under the bonnet and I use a tool roll that I got from John Worrall at Heart of England.

I'm not sure if the Runabout has a similar under- bonnet set up but if it doesn't, it is possible to get one made.
My first stop would be Kevin Vernon at Tudor Motors. Here is a link to one he made. As you can see, it is a really good bit of kit.

Getting the car to England isn't the problem. The problem is that where Beethoven 9 has his toolbox, I have my battery! Have to find another space to put the roll. I'm inclined to go behind the seats under the spare. Would I cause any clearance problems if I removed the styrofoam panel that holds the jack, the hammer and the first aid kit (that isn't there) and the 70mm spanner (that isn't there) and rebuilt it to the same specs but using 1/8" plywood? I might be able to make one of the recessed areas a little deeper in order to accommodate a proper toolkit and other sundries. Probably have to treat the underside of this unit when completed to seal the wood (boat varnish by SIKKENS).

Hi Brian,

Thanks. My thoughts exactly. Tupperware is a great idea. Use 1/4" plywood instead of 1/8" and trace the outline of the required size tupperware container on the wood, jigsaw them out and silicone kit the Tup containers into the openings! I like it! Still need separate all-wood cavity for the jack. Can do. thx
