I bought two cheapies from Currys a couple of years ago when my house was flooded and now have one in the garage and one in the garden shed

I only put them on for a day or two in a week during damper months and I’m just staggered at how much water they pull out and what a difference they make to the atmosphere and feel of materials

My garage is brick, attached to the house and very well insulated, dry and reasonable warm with good airflow and yet the dehumidifier has pulled out around 10 litres in the last couple of weeks by being on for about 60 hours in total

I know this sounds a bit daft but I have noticed that my mohair hood on the Mog is tighter

You should come and explain the virtues to our village hall committee. The place is damp and musty so my wife loaned a dehumidifier which brought the levels down from 80% to normality and produced gallons of water. She still can’t get the benefits into their thick heads though because the bunch of thick deadbeats don’t seem to think that women can understand science.

They are brilliant - taking moisture out of the air makes heating more efficient as water needs more energy to heat than air! So a potential cost saving too.

Seriously, my traction engine lives in a wooden shed which seems to breathe. It is well covered with ACF50 where it matters and has a greenhouse heater in the firebox over the cold winter months. Merlin lives in the brick built garage adjacent to the house. Not sure I would have room for a de-humidifier!

Keep an eye on the energy consumption of the dehumidifier itself! It takes quite some energy to get the water out of the air.
I have a dehumidifier to keep the basement of my house below ~60% r.h. (it would be higher due to construction defects). This dehumidifier is one of the biggest consumers of electricity in my house.

You'll have to run a Prius now or get lots of panels on the roof now to offset it, they are about as hungry as an air conditioner.

I'm on my third unit and have never looked back. Occasionally I bring it into the house and run it on the landing for a couple of days. The water it pulls from inside the house is staggering.

Or put up with steamy windows!!!

I have a little toy I use to monitor the load appliances create (standby can be interesting) It uses bluetooth to link to your iThingy and then stores in a cloud account so you can track it.

Plug it into the wall socket then plug the device into it. It monitors the power transfer and shows you guide pricing etc.

There is also a weather sensor (outdoor) which can monitor the climate back to the account.
