I was there, ended up dealing with an elderly person who drove from HATFIELD PEVERAL TO THE KELVEDON BYPASS on the wrong carriageway !!! luckily no one was hurt. He was finally stopped by HGV drivers blocking the road. Alzheimers and poor eyesight being a major factor.

Think simply increasing duty on fuel in a cost neutral way is the answer.

Avoids administration and policing costs and avoidance, and those who use the roads more or have less fuel efficient cars pay more.

Also, further incentive's electric vehicles.

Sounds easy - what's stopping them?

Because they don't think it would work. Whereas they expected the abolition of the tax disc to work........................

And it would allow for the re-introduction of road tax at some future stage when the government is cash strapped (again!).

I seem to remember it came close to happening in the late seventies. I think it was the Wilson (or Callaghan) government that announced that road tax would reduce annually and the tax transferred to fuel but when the time came the reductions never happened.

I agree in principle but this would remove the checking of MoT and Insurance, potentially more serious than eliminating VED dodgers?

Big Political problem here for the government who try this.

Mr sensible say no £150 a year VED but say £0.60 on a gallon of petrol, the same but different.

The Daily Mail says vote for the other party as these guys put the price of petrol up by £0.60 a gallon. The mythical man in the street says "yes they did that and attacked the working man who has to buy petrol to get to work"!!!!!!!!!!!!

In the age of Trump, Mr Sensible is not the one whom the Politicians are courting.

in 2009 27 billion was raised by fuel duty 32 billion by fuel and VED giving 5 billion raised by VED, (VAT not taken into account that added another 4) which would mean fuel would need a 18% price rise, given falling consumption in vehicles from 2009 round it up to a round 20% increase.

Given that that 20% would be on the fuel duty not the whole cost

Fuel duty currently is 57.95 p/ltr that would mean fuel duty would be 69.54 p/ltr then add that to the cost of the fuel and distribution and add VAT on top of that.

Funnily enough Gov figures give average UK pump prices as £1.04????? where is that then?

Even though I have a tax VED free car I'd happily see it transferred to fuel. I guess the classic crowd would be up in arms though!

It would make it a much simpler tax system.

None licensed or MOT'd vehicles could be addressed by discs easy enough. You get a piece of paper at an MOT why not a window sticker? none tamper type.

Forgeries will be available within a week of the first stickers being issued.
Less risky and easier than forging bank notes as your customers will all know what they are buying is illegal.
