I cannot locate the chassis number on my 1961 4/4. I scraped paint off the cross members under the passenger and driver seats as well as the cross member in the foot wells. Do I have to jack the car up to get the chassis number, and if so, how should I jack it up without doing any damage to the car?

I don't think you need to jack the car up for the chassis number they are normally in front of the car seats on the cross member as you say.

Could it have been re chassied do you think ?

As far as the chassis number, I can't find it at all. The car never was re chassied I've had it since 1968 and I don't think the previous owner did anything but put fuel in it. Everything is as it came from the factory in 1961.

Neither I or my mechanic can find the chassis number on my 79 4/4, even while having it up on the lift. Given the amount of rust damage and what I know of the car's history, I doubt any frame work was done prior to my ownership. I haven't given up.

It should be there, can't imagine that the fitter in the factory forgot to stamp it in.

It will be on one of chassis crossmembers and will be in numbers approx 1/4" high at least.

If you have an engine number (and assuming it is the original engine) the it is possible that the factory can check the records for the chassis number

The number on my 1960 Plus 4 (left hand drive) is on top of the crossmember beneath the passenger seat. The numbers are quite small and faint, and we're hidden by paint I think. The previous owner scraped to reveal them.

Have you had a look at the bonnet flange? It should give the chassis number and the factory clock number of the guy who made the bonnets. I can’t find my chassis number on the crossmembers of my original chassised (?) 1969 4/4 either! Good luck!

The bonnet flange will have the engine number not the chassis number as a quick check that the right bonnet was put back on after painting. My understanding is that around 1960 all bonnets were made by a man named Jack; no clock number needed, and there is none on my 1960 Plus 4.

Another instance of the variety you get with Morgan ownership!

The chassis number on my 1980 4-seater is somewhere behind the rear seats, I found it once when I was using the car as a pick up.

However, much more usefully it's also on a plate under the bonnet in front of the battery, as well as on the V5 document and my forum signature!

On my 1960 Morgan 4/4 Series I, the chassis number is located on the driver's (RHD) side of the chassis cross-member at the rear of the cockpit adjacent to the transmission tunnel cover.

Yours may be to the left of the tunnel cover. It should be in the range A590 to A648 if a Series III; starting B650 for a Series IV.

The other posts regarding the body/engine number. They should be stamped on the bonnet flanges for a car of your era. Apparently this same number was stamped on the bodyframe although I have yet to find it on my Series II.

By the way, VIN plates were never fitted to Morgans until later. My 1976 Plus 8 has one.

Finally, what engine is fitted to your car? Is it a Series III or Series IV?
