I'm with Asbo, the sinking/sickening feeling when you are faced with that moment does cut really deep. If there was any shiny lining I hope you found it.

But let's step back in time. The year was 1973. The destination was Oulton Park. I was in my '70 Midget - in Glacier White. My mate was in his '66 MGB. Formerly Mineral Blue it had just been resprayed Harvest Gold to make it look new. We were both on painted wire wheels. At that time I travelled everywhere at max revs in every gear, and wheelspins starts - you know, the usual laddish behaviour - now the territory of Corsaboy. We stopped for fuel at Middlewich. I pulled out of the filling station and accelerated hard down the main street (30 limit). My single silencer exhaust resonated off the buildings.....
Just as I flicked into third gear, a plump policeman jumped out from behind a pub and stood in the middle of the road. He was like one of those comic postcard coppers. I had the usual stern caution........then "How fast were you going?"
(Gulp)...I made a quick mental calculation. I reckoned it must have been 50plus. "about 40" I garbled. I was shaking with fear at this point and must have been as white as the Midget.
To cut a long story short, when the summons arrived I was clocked at 43, so my "about 40" stacked up really well. I got an £11 fine and an endorsement. Speed traps in those days looked like a piece of wire layed in the gutter leading to a small black box. No radar guns, and certainly no cameras.
To put that £11 into perspective, petrol would have been maybe 40p/45p a gallon.

Five years ago, we had just spent a fortune on my daughters Wedding Dress so feeling very elated as we sailed past that tree covered 'Gatso' at 34mph.
Who in the back is taking photos say's I, only to receive that £60 & 3 points stain letter a week or so later.

Dave surely you weren't old enough to drive then.

Yes, I anticipate a million or so of new investment and some tax planning work as well so worth the trip.

Many years ago I was driving thru Llangollen(30mph zone) going towards Bala in my Ariel Atom, saw a national speed limit sign ahead fast approaching, and just as I was about to put my foot down i noticed out of the corner of my eyes there was a van parked up behind the bushes literally just in front of the National speed limit sign(very sneaky), I quickly glanced down at my speedo it was indicated at around 35mph, thought I got away with it and of course I got the letter a few days later.

I bet they must have caught many out on that day!!!

Driving down the A303 to visit a client I knew that there was sometimes a speed trap at the bottom of one of the steep hills. As anyone who uses it will know, in summer months, it is full of caravans, lorries and VW camper vans. I got trapper for 10+ miles behind a line of such traffic actually being held up by an old boy in a Nissan Micra. The normally slower traffic were actually passing this guy, 1 by 1 and I felt like it would never be my turn; however, just before the hill it was. Knowing the trap may be at the bottom I held back despite the road changing from 1 to 2 lanes. As we got th bottom I saw the old boy in the Nissan get pulled. I actually felt bad for him; he'd probably been doing 20mph under the speed limit all day and thanks to the hill he got pulled.

First NIP in 19 years 2 weeks ago, 74 in a 60. Not heard yet. Hopefully just 3 points and a £60????

Also an amusing story from the Rabbit Run, BMW 335i driven by lovely, well spoken chap and his American friend over for the event, leading a Bentley containing two colourful characters (loveable rogue types ).

Driving briskly along single German roads towards the Nurburgring. Both go through a speed trap well in excess of the limit. Road dives into a long dip with solid central white line. Cars approach a VW Golf containing a couple of middle aged ladies, tootling along well within the limit.

As BMW Man comes up at a brisk closing speed he overtakes quickly in the dip running across the white lines. As he gets to the top of the hill as the road levels up, out steps Herr Flick with clip board who promptly waves BMW chap along his way and pulls over a shocked VW and the Bentley.

Bentley chap in horror and amusement runs out the car first and is relieved quickly of €90 and makes his escape before Herr Flick gets to the VW. I do so hope he believed them (I know I shouldn't)

The answer is that no amount of advice from the ACPO alters the law - it's 30 in a 30 limit. Anything above that is discretionary and police forces are independent so it's up to them whether they take notice of the advice or not.
