I believe they are using the same exemption that is used for other things DL running lights etc the exemption applies to models first produced before a certain date.

I notice that on the mytyres.co.uk website they state that TOYO 330s are only to be fitted to cars built before 1990. As this was one of the 165/80/15 tyres on my (very) short list for my 2004/5 4/4, I’m now a bit worried. Is this restriction only for Germany, or is there an issue in the UK too?

It is very confusing. I discovered the Toyo 330 at a German dealers website with EU label, therefore I see no restriction at all. May be for some unknown reason Toyo changed their policy and the dealers page is not up to date.

You must click on EU Reifenlabel. BTW on the same page the Vredestein in same size has no EU label.

I‘m very confused, indeed Toyo changed the policy. In the German and UK Toyo site the 330 now is without EU label. What is going on there (not only Toyo). TBH I would not stop to drive my 4/4 anyway, This is silly. If the size is the reason, then all manufacturers could change the policy over the next few weeks concerning 165 80 15. I take a small risk only for myself but Morgan resp. the 4/4 type must get an special regulation if even the tired Conti tyre would lose it‘s label.

Perhaps anyone here has more background knowledge of the tyre industry.

"Reintroduced for cars first registered prior to October 1, 1990, Toyo 330 is a comfortable tyre offering mileage and safety to older cars.

Toyo 330 is exempt from regulation EC 1222/2009 and UN/ECE-R117-02 as the tyre is designed to be fitted only to vehicles first registered before 1 October 1990."

Well I suppose the 4/4 was designed long before 1990 - but - ???

Now looking at Hankook K715 which look very similar tread pattern to the Toyo 330. The reasonably priced options seem to be less every time I look, and I won't go back to the Conti CT22s originally fitted, they were horrible, squealed in the dry, no grip in the wet.

Can any of the TMers who are/work for dealers shed any light on tyre choices for the 4/4 on standard 15" wheels?

I have heard about 4/4 owners who are really fine using the Hankook K715. When I recall it right Richard from Australia uses them too, he is satisfied but on the other hand he said that he has not so much alternatives down under regarding this size.

I agree, never go back to the Contis.

Retread tyres are exempt from the labeling requirement. The same is true for racing tyres, but then they are probably not road legal for cars made after 1990.

The Vredestein T-Trac2 in 165/80/15 is back on the market...including the EU label and without any admission restrictions. This is very good news because I was shortly before ordering the new Dunlop Sport Classic. The latter may be a good tyre but I know the T-Trac2 is a good tyre for one third of the Dunlop‘s price tag.
