The insurers definition is the only one to go by , mind you each insurer may have a slightly different take !

It’s if you are allowed to take your car to a show and they direct you to the classic parking!

A time-based definition is long overdue. After all Vintage and Veteran cars are defined on this basis.
The government exemptions are based on forty years, perhaps that could be used as a starting point.
There are several different definitions world-wide which seem to vary from 20 years upwards.
Defining a "Classic" on the basis of rarity or desirability is a non-starter in my opinion.
Insurers also vary in their application. I've had a ten year old car insured as a "modern classic" - whatever that is.

I don't believe there is a right or wrong definition - they are like women beauty and value is purely in the eye of the beholder.
I am more than happy that my car is of classic design but I'm not bothered at all which part of a car park I am herded into, I couldn't give a stuff I'm happy with it and think most of you guys are happy with yours too no matter what torygraph may think.
Doubtless in time the Veyron will be called one - to me it is a very fast slug like object of no desire.

It is a bit like the art world. What constitutes art? Vintage/Veteran are easy to classify as it is simply age. Who knows what triggers a car into a classic status? A bit of nostalgia/celeb owner copycat creating desirability?

From the Brookland Museum web site: General guidance on admission policy for classic cars via the Campbell Gate Entrance: Subject to events taking place, the following are generally admitted through the Campbell Gate Any vehicle more than 30 years old (or an example of a model that went into production before 1987). This means a prefix of D for those cars without personalised number plates). Significant, collectible more recent cars are also admitted, such as Morgan, Ferrari, Maserati, Lamborghini, Rolls Royce, Bentley or Aston Martin (this list is not exhaustive).

Yeah but you can’t deny the nice warm feeling when your modern Morgan is directed to a classic car park!

Yeah but you can’t deny the nice warm feeling when your modern Morgan is directed to a classic car park! Especially when it’s on naughty black and silver plates!
