Next update: I had a few weeks off after replacing the rear wings, so this morning I decided to crack on with the fronts, I want to get them all done ready for the Bicester Sunday Scramble on the 7th.

So, off with the bonnets, then the cowl. The exhaust system also had to come off to get access to the fasteners under the body tub. The wings came off without too much grief, next step is to clean everything down and start measuring up the new wings to see where they need to be trimmed to fit.

Same here. The secret with the triming is to take your time. Many small cuts and trial fits.

Thanks Martin, I have also come to the same conclusion. I laid out the wings on the garage floor yesterday, and quickly realised that it's practically impossible to get accurate measurements of the exact width of the wing to transfer from one to the other.

There's just too much variation possible in how one measures across the curves and angles, I did it 3 times and still couldn't get a consistent measurement to within 3 or 4mm.

The next plan therefore is to fit the wing to the car as you say by incremental small cuts rather than try to duplicate the existing shape - unless anyone has got any cunning schemes I haven't thought of?

Tim, why not pop to the factory and watch what they do there trimming wise?

That could be an option. The big difference of course with ally is that you can trim it in place using shears. With fibreglass I have to take the wing outside to cut it because of the dust.

There aren't actually that many absolutely critical dimensions as far as I can see, it's just the bit that goes against the bulkhead that needs to be tight. The rest of it is out of sight either under the bonnets, cowl, or body tub and can afford to be a mm or two either way.

Best way to cut the glass is a 4" angle grinder with a 1mm cutting disc. If you can get your apprentice to hold a vacuum close to the cutting action, you should be able to make cuts as offering the wing up.
