Best way to cut the glass is a 4" angle grinder with a 1mm cutting disc. If you can get your apprentice to hold a vacuum close to the cutting action, you should be able to make cuts as offering the wing up.
Yep, I'm using a dinky little Bosch with 3" ceramic disc - pic further up this thread.
