I hope that all of you who decry cash, even for small amounts, don't loose your cards one day and some tyke don't swipe away. You could them after wait for days for a new card. I use cheques just to be bloody awkward and keep up demand for them.

I hope that all of you who decry cash, even for small amounts, don't loose your cards one day and some tyke don't swipe away. You could them after wait for days for a new card. I use cheques just to be bloody awkward and keep up demand for them. I agree with you about cash John. I know that governments the world over are keen to eventually do away with it to make life harder for those involved in the black and grey markets, but there are many legitimate reasons to favour cash. Having been as poor as a church mouse at an early stage of my career, I find cash in my wallet to be a comforting thing. A couple of stressful experiences of a card not working for one reason or another, despite knowing that my account is in funds, means I always want some of the folding stuff about my person. There is something about the anonymity of cash that I like too; whenever you use a card you are leaving a trace, and a bit of information about yourself, which IMHO may not be any business of the market analysts who study these things. It does my head in that it seems you can't buy anything these days without it affecting the pop up ads on your computer and so on. On the flip side, I'm fairly astonished by people who come into my pub without even a Euro or two in cash about their person, and want to pay for, say a packet of crisps or a coffee with their Visa card. I let them do so as I no longer have to pay a minimum transaction fee; it's a straight percentage these days. I'd rather take their money than turn them away.

I'll try and be happier about the Costa now  ..   I see a lot of discussion about using the post office for banking. If it is anything like here they seem to handle everything but the post. Well they do handle the post but it costs an arm and a leg to send anything more than a national letter and you have to wait anything up to an hour to post anything or collect a registered letter. Our mail deliveries are now every second day. Private mail delivery companies are now starting to compete for bulk mail.

I agree with you about cash John. In Italy if you withdraw or bank cash of more than €3,000 as a private person it will be reported as will anyone banking a €500 note. Certainly the note was used in the black economy but it was useful in such things as the purchase or sale of a car or a bike privately. It is now impossible to exchange a €500 note in the UK as I found out much to my annoyance in 2015 - in 2014 I exchanged one at the Post Office without any problems other than presenting my passport. When I am travelling I now use a multi currency prepaid card from WeSwap

I think I should be thankful for the Mail service that we have reading about yours Peter. Ours is an efficient service on the whole with 6 days a week deliveries even out in the sticks where we live. You can get Car Tax, Fishing Licences and Passport paperwork from them as well. In our local village one there is never much of a wait unless you are behind one of those ebay sellers, well that could take a long time when they have 50 parcels. We do have private mail companies but this came about due to the Royal Mail workers continued strikes at one time, big business got fed up and found alternatives some of which are still used.

I sympathise with you totally Rich. In Frodsham, 3 miles from us, the HSBC closed last August. As it is a market town until a few years ago it was the busiest branch of the HSBC network in the North West of England apparently. Last October NatWest closed and in February Barclays is closing leaving just TSB. The Halifax closed 3 years ago. By then we will have gone from 6 cash machines in the town (Natwest had 2) down to 1 in the TSB. Only problem is this machine is located inside the bank due to it being listed and a conservation area so can’t be on the outside. There is a Mickey Mouse cash machine that you have to pay to take your own money out so that doesn’t count or get used.
Even going 8 miles to Chester and the large Barclays only has one cashier who can do limited things and an array of machines that nobody wants to use and if they’re forced need to be assisted as they’re not straight forward.
With regards to getting out cash the Post Office isn’t geared up to it and often have to limit people because they don’t hold enough of the stuff.
I use internet banking a lot but over the last couple of years have encountered a number of issues tha5 neither that nor telephone banking can resolve.
I might sound like a Luddite or just an archetype Morgan owner (albeit ex) but feel there is a larger gap in their service levels than ever before.

Crickey and I thought we had it bad Roger that is very dramatic changes in a short time span, my banking needs are uncomplicated as a retired person. I can't begin to imagine how difficult it must be for you that has a fair sized business to run and everything that entails. Friends of ours have a fairly large engineering works and it's worrying him, ordinarily it's not a word in his vocabulary so you have my sympathy. Far from being a Luddite you seem to be doing everything in the "modern way" it's just that the Banking system has yet to realise it has many shortfalls in it's downsizing exercise. Ironically Customer service which I'm sure will be foremost in your business ethic is seemingly the last as far as the Bankers are concerned. In my view they are leaving a golden opportunity for a new type of banking service with no frills but totally customer focussed to emerge. Interestingly no one on here has sung the praises of their branch.

I'm fairly astonished by people who come into my pub without even a Euro or two in cash about their person, and want to pay for, say a packet of crisps or a coffee with their Visa card. The convention in the pub where I drink is that if you want to pay using a card, then you round the bill up to the hearest £10 and take the change in cash. That way Rodda (the landlord) has less cash in his till to have to bank if you don't drink any more, and if you do, you've got the cash ready to pay for it.

I'm suffering a fair degree of cognitive dissonance here. On the one hand I am no fan of the banks, especially in view of the amount they have cost us over the last 10 years or so due to their incompetence, but on the other hand I have to say that Lloyd's in Stroud is a great little branch. I used to go in there every few weeks to draw out significant sums of cash to pay the builders, and it's a very friendly and customer-focused place.

We use Handlesbanken, they have no real branches....but work from an office near us. https://www.handelsbanken.co.uk/salisburyThe office is staffed by real people who offer advice and support, by phone or in person. If I call them the person on the phone knows who I am... The only thing they don't do is give out or take in cash. For paying in the odd cheque we use either the post office, or post the cheque to their clearing centre. To get cash out we use the cash dispensers at Tesco, but increasingly I use contactless payment. They do not provide credit cards, only a debit card. There is no free banking. But they do give a good service. Actually, banking in the 1960s style, but with a great internet banking facility.
