Just a little miffed to get a letter from DVLA to tell me the VIN recorded by the test station for the last MoT (in June!) of my 17yr old Mog is at odds with their records. I now have to faff about filling in a form stating vehicle reg (front and rear number plates) VIN on the current MoT certificate, VIN on the registration document and VIN on the actual car. Also, make, model and colour of the offending vehicle.
Given its age, this is obviously far from the first test on the car- all others completed without query.
All this admin will have to wait until the new year- in the meantime, where do I find the vehicle VIN?

ask the test station. :-) you might find that they used the alternator part number or simply left the vin from the pervious test they did.

actually, thinking about this, its a bit odd. I thought that they had to have the VIN to find the vehicle on the DVLA database so that it was impossible to input a test with the wrong VIN.

Try looking on the crossmember in front of the drivers seat, but on a 2000year car it may be elsewhere!
There should also be a plate on the bulkhead.

As this issue was niggling me, I decided to get it out of the way.
I found the VIN plate, loose inside the tool compartment under the bonnet. Comparing the documents, I see that the registration document had erroneously substituted '0' for 'D' and the MoT certificate had omitted a '0' altogether. I have sent photocopies of the documents, and plate, back with the required form to DVLA. Just have to securely mount the plate with pop rivets replacing the original adhesive.
Still find it puzzling that, after all these years, it has only just been spotted.

probably down to a new computer at DVLA/VOSA that cross checks data.

I was told, by an ex Policeman friend of mine that back in the 1970s there were nearly 100 vehicles registered to 10 Downing Street, London WC1. In some cases with the name of the PM...
Obviously all fraudulent, but he said the only way to check if a car was registered to a false address was to manually review documents.

I suspect that we are now much better at detecting this sort of nonsense.

I had a Moto Guzzi Monza in Australia that had a compliance plate where the VIN had been transcribed from the handwritten entry in the Owners Manual. The handwritten entry had a very badly written 5 where the top bar was out of place making it look like a 3. In effect the plate did not match the frame number though when I re-registered it after the lapse of a couple of years and restoration I did make sure the registration document was correct. I have since sold the bike but I imagine no one has ever noticed the discrepancy as they all work from the registration papers and just check to make sure a compliance plate exists.
