The M178 MB engine is pretty tight with the turbos in the V but the integration of the electronics and ECU stuff must be a BIG job.
Not to mention the cooling challenge when packaged in a Morgan with their small frontal area and limited room for large radiators & intercoolers. According to an interview with the MB program engineer in charge of M178 and the related M133 (the derived single-bank 2.0l inline four) the biggest development challenge for the outputs these engines provide was heat management and cooling. Pretty marginal in their OEM application according to him (and likely to require a back-to-blank-sheet approach to evolve them much beyond where they are now in terms of bhp/l). Be interesting to see how/if Aston Martin can raise the bar with the customer M178.

Is the Pony 5 litre v8 nice and compact and light to fit in the Mog cradle ??
I believe it's not quite as compact as a Chevy small block (up to 6.2 litre), interestingly enough. From what I have seen this is due to the Chev still using push rods SOHC configuration and a centralised cam... this means no need to accommodate the DOHC system and quad valves per cylinder which makes the cylinder heads so wide/tall on most other V8's. Rather than the full fat models from the Chev range - these are a bit more modest - its the Chev LS Ecotec3 range. 4.3L V6 LV3 5.3L V8 L83 6.2L V8 L86 That considered - given we have the FORD V8 now in the UK it would be nuts not to use this - Powertorque I suspect can supply Ford V8 units.

I wonder if the N/A V8 used in the Lexus LC 500 would fit?

Richard and Tcherek what an interesting article. If I were in the US with the money, I would put my name down for one of the 50th Plus 8 and hope to get it though approval.

Yes I would be amazed if Bill doesn't do just that so he has the 1st and last in his collection.
