At home I have a 100A fused supply, 11kw charge unit that charges at approx. 20 mph.
I also have a 9.9KW solar array with battery back up.
In the winter I charge the car using E7 overnight. In the summer months I will utilise more of the solar energy generated.

It is more efficient to transmit high voltage DC than high voltage AC. Why are the overhead lines on the railway AC instead of DC, then?

100A means that at 240V you could in theory charge at 24KW,
On a sunny day I add another 3.5 to 4 KW from the PV panels!! Electric vehicles, charged at home, make much sense as a second car or local runabout. But for anything over a hundred miles or so then petrol, or petrol hybrid and for regular long distance use, diesel, remain the logical choices. Thanks to the smart meter I see that we used 366KW this month, or about 30KW a day. Charging a car regularly would be a noticeable increase, unless done during a sunny day.

We run to about 20kw per day combined gas and leccy Both of us work from home, a bigger house, heating at 21C day, 18C at night, Server, 3 routers, and UPS, usually 2 PCs and 2 printers, HiFi and TV on standby, QUAD ELS 63 always on. And the electric Aga....Combined gas and electricity about 120KW a day.... All lights are now LEDs. Yes, it could be less. In April the server and UPS goes. But in the end it is the way we live.

Just a few figures from my own experience.
Recently got an i3 which is probably one of the more efficient electric cars. In warmer weather acieved about 4.2m/kWh and with temperatures around freezing about 3.8m/kWh. Reduction mainly due to increased battery resistance at cold temperatures and more energy used for car heating.
Biggest inefficiency, which most people tend to forget, is the battery storage efficiency which I calculate is about 80% for this car based on the reported energy used and the amount needed to recharge.
With home charging, rate is restricted to 7kW with a single phase supply. For three phase then rate increases to 22kW. Rapid charge is up to 50kW but this uses DC charge with the AC/DC conversion done in the charging station and not in the car.
Samller battery / range than the Tesla but more affordable and narrow enough to drive up the road to my house.
