I was surprised, when I removed the badge, to see it is thin pressed sheet. Not magnetic, so probably brass? New ones are not expensive but I don't know if the quality has improved. Mine lost bits of the black years ago and I touched it in with Humbrol enamel paint but it didn't key to the plating very well. The cold enamel technique does involve a low temperature curing and he gave it several layers to fill the depressions so it looks like a proper enamel badge.
I've got the old nose badge off my Lotus which is chipped. The original early ones where the lettering is sans serif now fetch silly money (hundreds) so I'm going to see if he can do an economic restoration. I was lucky enough to buy a new old stock original on eBay for about £75 before the prices went silly!
