In Austria, the regulations are not so strict. Telephoning is allowed with handsfree. At red lights even without handsfree. Listening to music from the mobile phone through the speakers in the vehicle is also allowed (but not selecting songs).
The use as a navigation device is allowed (device must be mounted in the vehicle). Entering the destination address while driving is prohibited.
The use of the mobile phone as a remote control is not explicitly regulated by law. If the mobile phone is used illegally while driving, the penalty is € 50, -

Just remember that you cannot use your iphone to control your radio while driving. You mean because of legal reasons? Yes it is an offence to use a hand held mobile phone or other mobile device unless parked with engine of and handbrake applied. For any purpose this includes as a GPS or to access music = £200 + 6 points. An alternative charge is Fail to maintain proper control = £100 +3 points. I wonder how the remote control is viewed in this context. It is only a group of buttons and much safer to use than groping under the dash.

For clarity from the government website
It’s illegal to use your phone while driving or riding a motorcycle unless you have hands-free access, such as:
a bluetooth headset
voice command
a dashboard holder
The law still applies to you if you’re:
stopped at traffic lights
queuing in traffic
supervising a learner driver
they are talking about hand held devices if mounted/hands free etc then you need to be seen as out of control. Otherwise they would not be allowed to sell vehicles here with steering wheel mounted controls and have them active when on the move.

I have one of those, and had wondered....
I think it needs to be mounted in a clip on the transmission tunnel to be legal, then it is no different to any other control unit on the transmission tunnel. Most cars, excluding a Morgan, have many!

But care should be taken when using that you keep your eyes on the road it only takes 2 seconds distraction to cause a collision.

I have assumed that if the mobile device is in a secure dashboard holder and being used as a Sat Nav then you'd be allowed to prod it occasionally - as you might with any sat nav. Is this wrong?

Is this wrong? depends on how you define prod ? you cannot re programme a GPS while driving and most GPS systems won't allow it unless you turn off the facility which is not very wise. Phones in holders it is allowed to hit a button to accept a call or cancel but not to scroll for a number or text.

Maybe its because I am getting on a bit but I find even looking at a sat nav as distracting and liable to cause me to wander a bit within my lane. Trouble is you sometimes need to look at the screen to interpret what the sat nav is saying.
There simply is no way that I could reprogram a sat nav or operate a phone and keep my car on the road.

Jeez oh, my son just passed his driving test today, but I didn’t realise I couldn’t use the phone while co driving. Doesn’t matter now, but I’m fairly sure I used it a few times.

Due to a communication error the classic rod antenna was mounted   The solution will now be to use a splitter.
