Got an old Nikon D5000 +5 lenses. want to upgrade to newer kit, staying with Nikon! but do i go stay with DX or move up to FX? At the moment i'm favouring D500! Anybody got any practical experience of this camera?

If you have DX lenses they won’t work with a full frame body....(or at least utilise it all).

I'm a big fan of Nikon DX kit, I currently have a 7100 and I love it.

I have occasionally thought about going to full frame, but I've realised that, like everything in life, it's not the equipment that's the limiting factor.

Plus of course the positively eye-watering cost, a Nikon D850 body is getting on for £4k. Mind you, the Df is a lovely thing...

The classic look of the DF is fantastic! But like you say , have to be there for 1 and know what you'r doing with what you got!

Bit of thread drift this one. I like gadgets / techie things and from that perspective I would like a decent slr. But I have thousands of photos on the PC HDD and I almost never look at them. So whats the point?

So leading on from that, what do you actually do with the photos you take using your expensive kit? Or is the taking of them what its all about?

I upgraded from the D300s to the D810 and it is brilliant, have now upgraded all my lenses as well. Was worried about the size of the files but it hasn't been a problem especially as I have now upgraded the iMac.

We brought an Apple TV and have all our photos on Apple’s iCloud and when the TVs aren’t on they randomly show photos. We love the memories (and often guessing where and when).

The D500 is a very good bit of kit but so are the D7200 and D7500, if you really need the faster autofocus and frames per second then well worth the extra but otherwise in image quality terms there generally isn't a lot to choose between the three of them. Sport and wildlife are about the only things that really require the speed of the D500 and even then arguably only if you are making your living from the camera.
Going to full frame can get you files that are much more malleable in post processing; shadows can be lightened to a much greater degree without falling apart and that allows you to catch the highlights better too particularly in difficult light. This is the real advantage of full frame but only matters if you are going to shoot in RAW and spend time carefully massaging the files till they look/are right. The cost of the D850 is a bit vicious at the moment with Nikon only now starting to catch up with demand for them. The D810 is an excellent camera and might make a lot of sense, particularly second hand where the older D800 was a bit of a pain in use. Like Ian, I've been using the D810 for a while and do like the results but I may well upgrade at some point to the D850. Incidentally, the D850 seems to be basically as good as the D500 as a sports and wildlife camera, the image quality even when cropped to DX is right there, as is the autofocus and the frames per second isn't far behind. The price still hurts though.
