Welcome, Will! Looks like you're planning a great trip. I completed a very similar one back in June-July of this year (17) - hitting all 48 contiguous states! Managed to do it in about 11K miles but would have really preferred to do it in 15-18K to allow for more "back roads" driving.
I can't offer much assistance in the technical arena as I don't own a M3Wer - but would love to give you my .02 regarding interesting stopping points, etc.
