For any of you with 17 year olds, I found a great insurance company which deals exclusively with learners, quite a clever business model as they’re actually quite a low risk with a co-driver. The policy ends when they pass the test, but you get all the unused premium refunded. Collingwood insurance covered him for 5k miles pa. in a new scirocco, no black box required for just over £500 He passed his test last week, his birthday was December so the deal didn’t last long, he’s £1200 with Aviva now for the same thing, that was the cheapest we found with or withou a black box.

Another tip for those with a young driver in the household - if you have a number of vehicles, a multicar policy allows multicar discounts to be applied to the new driver policy even though they have their own separate subpolicy and, importantly, their own NCD status. This halved the cost of insuring the younger TwoTribes in a VW Polo R-line 105ps (and saved me money on 4x my own vehicles).

Hi Ewn
My son paid £1200 with Hastings Direct, he had to have the box fitted though, this came with a number of restrictions.
My wife and I were named drivers too.

I vaguely remember paying £14 per month as a 17 year old. Third party fire and theft. Ford Anglia 997cc with more rust than Anglia.
So around £150pa in 1970 is probably close to £1200 now.

I vaguely remember paying £14 per month as a 17 year old. In 1976 at the age of 17 I got my first road-legal motorbike (Triumph Tigercub) insured 3rd-party only for £15 a year. I was particularly miffed to find out that a mate had managed to get insurance for his BSA C11 for only £11.

I understand that it works out cheaper if the young driver has their parents included on the policy as additional drivers. Don't really understand why that is but apparently it is well worth doing.

Adding a parent as a named driver helps to bring down the cost of the insurance premium because you won’t be the only person driving the car, and therefore the associated cost is lessened. In fact, according to MoneySuperMarket data, 35% of younger drivers aged 17 to 24 have a named driver on their policy, making their premiums up to 13% cheaper.
