The new pump I fitted to my MGV8 in 1991 (Unipart), was almost the same as the original, except the top take off pipe was at a slightly different angle, but the biggest difference was the impeller. The original had a large close fitting impeller. The replacement had a much smaller impeller with much bigger clearances. It seemed to work OK.

When you bolt everything back up the ‘factory’ procedure is to clean and coat the bolts with 3M EC776, this is described as a lubricant sealant and is a sticky, volatile goop requiring its own even more volatile cleaner. My understanding is that it hardens off in air, so once the water pump bolts are withdrawn they should be kept ‘wet’ by storing them in paraffin.
As a modification, complete sets of replacement bolts in stainless steel are easily available (eBay) and may help on any subsequent replacement.

I still have a tin of that stuff in the garage. Its probably gone hard. Very similar stuff to adhesive for soundproofing felt.
