To add to this guide, I had the gearbox oil changed over the weekend as part of a service.

The oil originally used in the Series 1 Getrag box is BMW MTF-LT-1, this has been superseded to BMW MTF-LT-2. This should be the same for all Series 1 Aero's using the getrag box (6 spd manual), a sticker is positioned on the NSR of the gearbox which details the oil specification originally used when new.

A complete change will require 2 litres of oil (capacity is around 1.75l), the drain plug is found underneath the rear of the box, and fill is just above on the nearside rear.

Cost of the oil was approx £55 from BMW.

may i ask Nick , why you do not speak of 10W60 ?
we use that in all our BMW engines....

i can imagine we have more profit of high temp protection instead of by - 30 °C ?

interesting Nick;how did the old oil look when it was drained out?

I was advised that changing it was not a big priority but ,given the similar age of our cars, I might be tempted if it was looking 'manky' (technical term...!).

If you look at a good number of used oil analysis results for 10W/60 oils you will find that most of them shear to a xW/50 within 2,0000 to 3,000 miles and they have these days gone out of fashion as an OE recommendation.

I believe that BMW and Alfa Romeo do specify them for some of their older engines but I have not seen them recently specified for newer cars.

Due to the excellent results obtained from the latest 0W/20 oils they have virtually taken over for new cars due to their fuel saving properties.

Therefore 10W/60 is more of a racing oil or used in problem engines that tend to put a lot of heat into their oil but results advise short duration in the life of the oils at high temperatures.

indeed Eddie , we use it in highly modified M3 engines , as in M30 ones... for max 3000 miles. Those are rally cars , not dailys.
Just was wondering if it should have benefit in a modern daily... ?

The reason why I didn't mention a 10w60 oil was based on Tim's advice below:



It is the above reasons why BMW do not list it as a recommended viscosity for these engines.
A good quality Ester-Synthetic of viscosity 0w40/5w40 will provide all the protection our engines would need even under hard track use.

That does not mean that all engines shouldn't use 10w60 however, but its use should be limited to those which specifically ask for it. There is more detailed information here for those interested.

It looked like used engine oil, which in my mind is good reason to change it!
Most fluids will go like this after a certain time period, as they will break down, absorb moisture and particles etc. I think after 16 years it was a worthwhile job.

Would you say you have noticed any difference in performance (of the gear change) since you had this done ?

I know it is often difficult to tell with these things whether improvement is real or imagined, but I would be interested in your views.....
