Hi Philip,
I am trailering the car in tomorrow, so should have some news next week. I am hoping its something simple like a failed pipe, etc but I think I am kidding myself!

Good luck. I've mentioned before on a different thread that I once took delivery of an Aeromax (during the 2009 Centenary) from the factory for a friend and drove it for about 250km. A fantastic car but I found the feel of the steering poor compared to my Aero S1 that I was driving before and after the delivery. It felt dead around straight ahead with initial resistance before turning, quite unlike the great feel of the S1.

Aerotaff, I was told by a good UK dealer that you can test the original steering pump for wear, and that wil give you some advance warning of imminent failure. My S1 had about 42,500 miles on the clock when I sold it and the wear was not excessive.
To test you need to get your hand down onto the drive cog for the pump. If you have more than about 1/2in of play (on the circumference of the cog) then failure is imminent. On mine at sale I had less than 1/3 inch.
Personally I'd stick with the original mechanical pump even if you have to get it repaired.
Cheers Does anyone know who can repair the original S1 mechanical pumps? Also, as a back up, I'd like to get hold of the correct mini pump, can anyone please advise which models & years suit, or maybe even a part number. Would also be useful to know what else in addition to the mini pump itself would be required. Any help would be most appreciated as I'd like to be prepared if this were to happen as we need to make sure we can keep these cars running Thanks Ian

But the installation is unique to Morgan as are the couplings to the nose of the crankshaft I’ve made drawings if all the parts and can remanufacture as necessary The mini pump is a better option and doesn’t affect steering feel. The later cars have s different steering rack which gives the slightly dead feel. I’ve designed and prototyped a kit for fitting the mini pump as Morgan no longer have any spares and can make these kits to order Simon @ SiFab.co.uk

Simon, that's very interesting. I had wrongly assumed that the difference was because the hydraulic pump is engine driven and therefore always providing pressure whilst the electrical pump is on demand and there was a short delay before assistance was provided.

Simon (SiFab) - am I right in thinking there are no steering racks if that is found to be shot? Are you refurbishing them? Just worried that its a really serious issue with mine

Are we saying that any 2001-07 Mini PAS pump is suitable for use, I think it is worth getting hold of one to keep by, just in case new old stock got hard to find

It’s my understanding that the Jack knight custom designed rack was used due to lack of space and suitable Oem items. It’s been 20 years since the Aero was designed now, I wonder if anything has appeared in the mainstream car market that utilises something that could be adapted to fit? I guess ANYTHING is going to need a lot of work and won’t be tried until every jack knight rack is gone or un-salvageable.......god help the person who has to pay for that.....

Simon I suspect the 3D scanning and printing industry will really begin to help the classic car market in the near horizon so it may not be as bad as it might seem. 3D metal sinter printing is already used to create hydraulic manifolds.
