Well guys good news, I used the string system to check and then reset the steering alignment.
I bought a bobbin of yellow builders string and used axel stands to setup both sides of the car.
Due to my inexperience I measured many many times to get the setting. It was toeing out particularly on the left hand side (from the driver's seat).
19mm spanner to loosen both tie rod end and steering rod.
I adjusted, remeasured and tightened and remeasured. Out for a run through bends, roundabouts and some uneven surfaces. Another tighten and another measure. Pretty pleased with the result. A good tyre shop could do it much much quicker. Thanks to those who gave advise..
