What I am finding a stupid idea is the dimmer street lights . I came along a road in a busy area of Gateshead well after m/night . Dim as hell car lights on full and no painted arrows on the road . It was only when I got very near I spotted the way through the dark. Its getting to the stage of putting the fog lamps on to light up the kerbs .

I always rely on the voice directions and don't look at the screen..

You've a point there Jack The Lad, they've recently replaced the sodium street light out side my mother in laws with some new LED thing. Its useless, it casts a beam of light on the about 4 ft in diameter and that's it

The old boy in the house next door is afraid to go out of his house because he can't see to safely use the pavement after dark because the lighting is so poor.

Distraction does cause accidents and is a quick route to prison if there's a fatality.

Mobile phones should be disabled if moving faster than walking pace. We must have that technology now.

It would also be a bonus on trains!

I find that our large screen Tom Tom works well for me. In particular, it changes the view at junctions so if you need a visual clue as to where the next road really is, it is already on the screen in large scale. I leave the volume set quite high and mostly rely on voice commands from the box - after all a junction is where you should be looking at the road and not at a device.

I do set it so I can see it easily so that I can easily check ETA when cruising as, for me, one of the benefits of a Sat-Nav is keeping my speed down on longer journeys by removing the urgency from relying on a very rough journey time calculation. I now allow enough time and believe I have done so through the Sat-Nav's traffic information system and auto re-route function.

Our recently acquired Mini Clubman has a built in Sat-Nav which is very much inferior to the Tom Tom - fixed view unless you navigate through menus which, as others have said, is a distraction whilst driving.

Applications on your phone can often integrate with the diary. If you enter the location and address into your diary they can grab them automatically as you start it. Waze definitely does this very well.

Howard this is a big topic among pilots of light aircraft. The iPad (with navigation app) is now ubiquitous and as many planes don't have the panel space it is usually strapped to the knee. This means more time with head in the cockpit and not looking out for other traffic. The amount of information these devices can provided is fantastic but it is a big distraction from flying the plane and avoiding others. This is exactly the problem you are describing and yes it will lead to accidents. We need a device to whack us around the ears or provide an electric shock three seconds after our eyes shorten their focus from outside the cockpit to inside. Morgan cockpits included.

Some will recall the helicopter crashing into a crane in central London a couple of years ago. The results were tragic and according to the investigation, texting by the pilot, "was a mechanism that could increase stress and introduce rapid changes of plan." i.e. it's likely to have been a contributing factor.

I will admit to not having seen the AAIB report.
It's easy enough to get disorientated up there, without distractions. Just thinking of the 70 something y.o. of a light aircraft that came down in a back garden 5 doors up the road.

An M3W could be considered a very safe car as there is almost nothing to fiddle with only 4 toggle switches. My vintage car has 6 switches including indicators.
