Depends on ceiling clearance, most 2 or 4 post lifts are 2.8metres tall or more.
Scissor lifts are more viable in an average modern garage that tend to have normal room height ceilings.

Scissor lifts are more viable in an average modern garage that tend to have normal room height ceilings. That was our challenge. We were advised that we wouldn't get permission for a ceiling height greater than 2.4m as it would be considered as a commercial development, and therefore not permitted in the AONB. As it is, the scissor lift is absolutely fine to sit or kneel under. I haven't encountered any problem yet with access underneath, the scissor and rams are concentrated in the middle of the car, leaving full and open access to the engine and rear transmission/suspension. Access to the prop shaft is through the interior of the car, so I can't imagine any circumstance in which I'd need to get to the middle of the car. If I did, I'd probably just put a couple of trestles under the car and drop the lift out of the way.

Parking car lift. Looks like an light-version of an "professional four porter". And the price is also the light-version of an professional one.

I in the end built a 4 mtr high garage extension but we live in the country and the planners demanded we formally asked for planning permission. They gave permission with no issues within a week or so.

John, I have a similar plan to you when I finally clear out the garage. I have been looking at scissor lifts but still undecided on which one. I am drifting towards the automotech type with electric/pneumatic/hydraulic combination but not the smaller, lighter versions as, despite seeing the entry level ones of various manufacturers in the flesh I am not 100% happy with stability.

Thanks guys. food for thought. We will move close to Ipswich but on the eastern side. Probably Melton or Tunstall.
