Almost all open cars suffer from backdraught to some degree. You can see the effect with the dirt on the back window of an estate car or even on the number plate of a saloon. The abrupt end of the bodywork, and no one could accuse a Morgan of being streamlined, causes an abrupt change in direction of the air flowing over the body and a flow forward. You can physically feel this effect on a motorbike. From what Gambalunga posted it looks like this backdraught is combined with a poor catalyst letting quantities of unburnt hydrocarbons out of the exhaust. This is what you will smell. Whether the catalyst also is letting out carbon monoxide, which seems likely, I do not know. Carbon monoxide doesnt smell .
Side exhausts will have a shorter hotter run letting the catalyst work better and could well be letting the gasses out into an airflow ehere they will be well diluted before any backdraught at the rear of the car.

I.I.R.C. Russell Paterson (Revolutions Morgan) has a side exit silencer for a +4SS on display in his showroom, no doubt at a price! Don

Meabh,
My Brooklands Roadster 3.7 already has the Aero Racing Sports exhaust fitted so it is louder than the standard system (I had a "bespoke" Roadster 3.7 previously to compare). With the side exits, the exhaust note is deeper but not noticeably louder from inside the car. The sports silencer remains in place and the standard tailpipe which has a resonator at the tip is replaced by the side exits which do not have a resonator. A local (Ayrshire) custom exhaust specialist made the exit pipes for me for a total of £200.00. Regards, Don.

I had the same problem with my P4SS very bad made me dizzy when driving long distance. Hydro carbons where far too high ,tested at local test centre . Fitting new plugs with the correct gap helped a lot to make it bearable. The gap as fitted by the factory was too small.

I had thought that this was an ECU fix?
I drove two SSs in 2014 when I was thinking about buying one.
Both had been "fixed" neither suffered the fumes issue.
I think Williams had a hand in this fix - but I stand to be corrected.

Cured the exhaust fumes issue with this: Air fed mask!!!! But on a serious note there was an exhaust clamp missing (!!) on one of the down pipes which I guess when the car was pressed hard the joint opened up and allowed gasses to escape. This joint was under the drivers side wing. Completed 240 mile trip today with roof off...no fumes RESULT !!!!!! Almond Tart

As DW said, Tarka, which has no rear spare, has a big issue with lots of muck in the cabin. OK, but not on a wet road when the screen needs wipers on the inside!
There is no exhaust smell, but the BMW V8 seems to clean up the exhaust well, exhaust emission values from the MOTs show HC at 0ppm, the limit is 200ppm even though the lambda value is 1.030, the top limit.
