Ref. free motoring; I doubt it. Let's face it money will be lost on any new car but that is not the be all end all about an emotional purchase.

Yes Morgans depreciate slower than most from the new retail price, but they do depreciate.

£107K ish now. 3 years down the track? The market will decide. £50K? £60K?

I'm less sure...

Williams Morgan offered me more than I paid for Tarka against a new 50th Anniversary edition. The replacement value for insurance is £15k more than the price I paid, based on similar Plus 8s that have been sold by UK dealers in the last 12 months.

BUT the price hike we see for the "Last 50" is substantial for what are essentially cosmetic differences. So perhaps there will be an initial depreciation... however it will be less than on a mainstream production sports car at the same price point.

IIRC, my 1986 4/4 cost a smidgeon under £8000 new, which equates to about £23k today.

Although my car is about as unoriginal as you can get, I reckon it's probably still worth something like that.

Iso if you want to be sure of not losing any money from the purchase of a Morgan, simply hang on to it for a few years. They'll probably drop a bit up to around 5 years old, but after that they'll more than compensate for the effects of inflation.

Logic not 100% correct here Peter.

The cost from a dealer includes their warranty which a car an owner has if a few years old and is usually out of warranty.

Will an insurance company pay for what they call betterment as the owner would be getting a warranty on the replacement car at dealer prices while the one it replaces is usually out of warranty. I think they would pay less to make up for that.

You never know!

I think it depends on the model. Certainly when I sold my 4/4 I took a £5k hit from Williams ....which came as a surprise as I’d bought in to the myth that Morgans don’t depreciate. But buy or sell through a dealer and they have to make a profit. I’ll get nowhere near breaking even when I sell Nero but it’s still hugely cheap motoring and how do you put a price on the cost of fun ?

I think demand and supply are factors as well as time. My first 4/4 was with me for eighteen years and I got twice what I paid for it in p/ex. The second broke even after eighteen months and the third, which I sold a year ago cost fifteen new and brought me twenty three after seventeen years. Costs are relative but with the passage of time and the enjoyment factor considered, I still think Morgans are a good idea.

Don't forget to factor in what you spend on upgrading and modifying the Morgan, you don't usually get that money back, you don't need to spend on other marques.

Same for me - that's why six out of the seven Morgans I've owned have been 4/4s!!

Allon White gave us £2k more for our 1985 4/4 than we paid for it in 2003 when we traded it in against the new 4/4 in December 2013. Another popular dealer had offered us £3k less and were more interested in selling us the unregistered +4 they had in their showroom (that was beyond our budget) than in selling us a new 4/4 that we could afford.

I've had chance to do some digging & it was in excess of £55k at the time, around 15/18yrs ago. They seem to go now for an awful lot less than this nowadays..?
