My little Boston is 100% reliable with kids - even when pulled about etc.

I do think dogs have built in empathy with children .

Now having said that there are always exceptions and parents are right to be wary.

My Cairn ( now departed) helped a five year old up the road to overcome fear of dogs - I was mad still am delighted!

*any* dog?

I see your dachshund likes to sleep in the bed too. Ours would if she could and lived for 17 years. Alis still misses her, they are a very particular dog. We now have a young pincher, in similar colours, who will get into the bed if she thinks she can get away with it.

My little Millie

They are certainly very special dogs. This is from my post two years ago. At the time the photos were taken she would have been more than 15 years old and going grey (like her owners).

We were on the way to Geneva in the train when a phone call came from the lady who was looking after Erba to say she was in a lot of pain and nearly in a coma. She was 17 years old and had not been eating much for the last few days. Unfortunately it had arrived at the point where a decision had to be made.

Erba was a dog who loved to go in cars, the destination was unimportant, to travel was the thing.

With me alone in the Morgan she was happy in the foot well but when Alis was in the car she insisted on riding in Alis's lap and watching the road.

When she saw the bags being packed she knew we would go away without her.

Alis would have liked to be with her at the end, but it was not to be.

Thats very sad Peter - you and Alis gave her a very good life.

Am sorry for your loss.

One of my Staffies used to get under the engine so I could not go off without him refused to come out till I opened the passenger door . Sit there like he was owner no sidescreen wind in his face he would curl up on the seat if it got very windy . Should have handed him a duster and wax but he had worked out who was the master HIM . He would sneeze all over the dash and screen constantly, Morgan should have come up with a inner wiper for dog nutters. Got an old red Miscellany with a photo of a mate his +4 Fiat 4 seater and sitting in the drivers seat is his ex police dog with a flying helmet and goggles on outside a pub.
