I see from the bill from RD Racing at Paul Ricard (less than I had feared) that they have not fitted the Dunlop SP Sport as I suggested but have fitted a Yokohama S71B. This tyre appears to be too new to have garnered any reviews as yet. It is standard fitment for a Honda Jazz so might be seen as suitable for the back of the Morgan, given my status as a multiple grandfather. However I am somewhat concerned this is only a T rated tyre (118MPH) and I think it should be H rated (130MPH)

Anyone got any experience of the Yoko S71B?

I note with a little surprise that Michelin's recommendation for the M3W is actually a winter tyre, the Cross Climate in H rating. I would fear that I could overheat this tyre at the height of summer and shred it rapidly. Good for the folks in Aberdeen in the winter though.

Its an All Season tyre technically so I doubt Summer use will be an issue...

Strangely enough, I live in Aberdeen and have a Cross Climate on the three wheeler!
It's been good in the cold and in the hot; had temperatures into the mid thirties Celsius last summer on the Autobahn and while crossing the South of France and Spain on my way to Caramulo and it just worked, haven't found any obvious weak spots and will almost certainly stick another one on when it's worn out. Saying that, if I lived in the South of France I would probably get something cheaper without the cold rating. I'm not convinced that the three wheeler is particularly sensitive to back tyre choice; the only tyre I didn't like was the Sportmax, and that was no problem till I drove it in winter conditions and it just wasn't interested in sticking to anything.

I have now heard from Morgan and the official requirement for the rear tyre is a minimum of an H speed rated non-asymmetric 175/65 r15 with a minimum of an 84 load rating. The standard fitment is a Yokohama Blue-Earth in these specs. The Dunlop SP Sport Blu-Response I asked the dealer to fit would actually exceed those requirements as it is a symmetric H with a 91 load rating and is an approved fitment by Morgan, as is the Michelin Cross Climate.

The Yokohama S71b tyre the dealer has fitted, is two speed ratings too low at T, asymmetric and was designed specifically as an economy orientated tyre for a Honda Jazz and as such, is totally unsuitable. I really cannot understand what the dealer was thinking of. I feel therefore, I am quite within my rights insisting that the dealer change the tyre to one of the correct spec, at his labour expense, as his error. I have said I will pay for any difference in cost of the actual tyre. For availability reasons in France, I have asked him to fit a Michelin Cross Climate. I shall be furious if I turn up to collect the car early next month only to find the unsuitable S71b is still mounted. Apart from anything else, it would invalidate my insurance. Unfortunately I have already paid the bill so have less leverage.

Why does everything to do with cars and dealers have to be such hard work?

You purchased a British hand-made barely street legal race car. That sentence contains many open doors to interesting events!

......but also having lots of problems with my new Porsche Panamera Hybrid, mainly electrical so it is not just the British. "Hand slung together" might be a better description of the M3W than "hand made" :-)

Michael, truer words have never been spoken. With your permission, I'm going to quote that as a badge of pride whenever I hear the question "But, why???" on my M3W again.
