Yes, same principle. Pump storage schemes work very well in mountainous areas with high precipitation rates. The mineshaft idea is better suited to areas that aren't so hilly but have plenty of disused mines.

Over in Germany they are experimenting with cutting out enormous cylinders of rock from the surrounding ground and then pumping them up with water so the plug rises out of the ground like a giant gasometer - but one that is 100+ metres across and would be pumped 50 metres into the air.

Sorry - but I feel responsible for this - the gas boiler packed in this morning and so we are resorting to 2x electric fan heaters, kettle & shower for hot water. Can`t be fixed until Monday. Apologies to the National Grid. Plus the solar panels are covered in snow so we`re not even contributing.

Have you checked that the condenser pipe isn't frozen? I know nothing about boilers but I just saw it posted on Facebook, gas boilers everywhere are breaking down because of it. Some hot water on the white pipe outside is apparently what it needs.

Glad you have a fix date. My parents, who are both in their eighties, are also without a boiler and have been trying to contact Brtish Gas since 7.15 this morning, with no luck. The "book an engineer" link on the BG website was disabled around lunchtime. frown

Check the condenser trap. I have a Worcester boiler and that kept cutting out just before Christmas. The trap was gunged up so boiler refused to run. My plumber couldn't call as he was off on hols but he talked me through cleaning it. Relatively simple. It is usually cleaned at annual service but overdue this year due to a house move. Cleaned and replaced and boiler back working.
Annual service done as soon as he got back.

One of the issues regularly used by the anti-EV lobby is the supposed inability of the National Grid to support a significant increase in demand on the network caused by a large uptake in the use of electric vehicles.

In the energy generation and supply industry this has never been thought significant, we're busy developing all sorts of innovations to support EV usage.

Now it's reassuring to know that the National Grid has made a very clear statement of its ability to cope, in a statement to the Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy Committee.

Thank goodness for that. One less thing to worry about.

Finally cracked it the reason all the civilised nations are going for electric vehicles - it will reduce the burden of the ever increasing aged population as they will all get run over as they go Mutt and Jeff. NHS and State pension funds will be exploding with cash laugh2..
