Hi Everyone,

Had a visit to the River Wye yesterday for my first foray this season in search of a salmon.

As usual nothing doing but the scenary really is magnificent. But what really made the day was the sighting of an otter.

I watched it for about ten minutes as it searched for a meal. It's luck or skill or whatever was the same as mine and he disturbed no fish (cos there weren't any there!). But it really was a delight to watch.

Interestingly, I am reliably informed beavers are on the upper river and more are to be "stocked" and that beavers and otters do not get on together.

I look forward to seeing more of nature as the season progresses.

Regards

Geof

I used to spend more time watching the wildlife than actually fishing as a youngster Geof.
Gave up the fishing a long time ago, but not the wildlife watching smile

Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day.

Teach a man to fish and he'll doze on the river bank all day drinking beer...

I used to fish the West Wales rivers. I love the Llangadog area of the Tywi. I saw an otter there a couple of times. Made the night.
Once when fishing just above Carmarthen I saw a seal in the river in the confluence pool with the Gwili. Just above tidal and the freshwater gets pushed back by high tides, reversing flow and water level rises...can be dangerous!
I am working on restarting again.

We christened our Plus 8 "Tarka" because the metallic dark bronze reminded us of the colour of a wet otter in the sunshine. Glorious, wonderful little animals.

The only otter I have seen in the wild was 2 years ago at dusk in the Spring time on the Kingswear side of the Dartmouth Higher Ferry road. He slid down the bank and crossed the road and I followed him for around 100Mtrs before he disappeared into the undergrowth.

A wildlife Vet friend of mine said it could well have been a young male looking for a partner, I'll never forget it a very special few moments.

We have otters close by on the Somerset levels. About 3 weeks ago at around mid-night I stopped to let one pass across the A39. I couldn’t believe my eyes. Hope they don’t make a habit of doing that!
