Not sure if there has been a thread on this before but going through the magazines etc. collected over the weekend at the NEC there is an interesting point in the Feb. edition of Classic Car Monthly. Discussing the MOT exemptions for older cars it states that in the Guidelines footnote it states "If the type of vehicle is still in current production it is not exempt from periodic testing". As this includes the majority of Morgans, perhaps we need to be aware of this. Morgan pride themselves on the fact that production and build methods have remained roughly the same for decades and the 4/4 is the longest continuous production of any model, this would seem to indicate that most Morgans could not be exempt. Ideas from you legal eagles out there?

It will depend on the interpretation on "type of vehicle".

Can anyone with a suitably aged Morgan confirm the situation?

The exemptions for 40 year old vehicles come into effect on 20th May 2018. My 4/4 is eligible and its "tax" and MoT are both due at the end of May, so I will let you know. Pre 1960 cars are already MoT exempt.

Also does anyone know what the owner has to do to take advantage of not having to MOT and tax a 40 year old car? is there some paperwork to complete or doesone not just MOT or re tax their car? Barry ______________________________ 78 4/4 4 Seater

My understanding is that to take advantage of the MOT exemption you will have to confirm that you car is unmodified.
Or more accurately, that any modifications meet certain parameters set by the DVLA.
I assume this will done on a form of some sort.
As usual the DVLA don't seem to make much effort in communicating this information in advance.

Thanks for the link. The guidelines seem quite reasonable. The only areas that I can see that potentially affect Morgan owners may be engine swaps to a different type and substantial changes to the suspension. As a serial classic car owner I know that any changes to the cars I've owned, or will own, were made more than thirty years ago

The above link suggests that vehicles built between January 1960 and January 1977 need an MOT. https://www.gov.uk/government/uploads/sy...ge-guidance.pdf However this link says that vehicles over 40 year old will be exempt from MOT and the owner will claim exemption when renewing vehicle tax. It's all as clear as mud!
