Correct Graham. Hopefully we will move to a house near Felixstowe. We are downsizing. So one extra bedroom, giving 5 in total. Ah ! Join Folkmog perhaps ?

Howard, there are not so many choices. I guess a BMW Z8 or the new AMG GT convertible which I like are too heavy for your taste. If you look for a youngtimer which is reliable, makes fun, easy to get in and out and is free of excessive regulation, consider perhaps a well cared BMW Z1. And it's an exclusive car that you don't see every day.

Remind me why a Boxster doesn't fit the bill. You have a point. Maybe a 996 turbo? How electronic are they? How about a bit older and not as fast but fun - TR6 for example - really mint older car. Did the Triumph bit earlier - I did say something reliable, that isnt a rust heap and has 300bhp/tonne or thereabouts. A TR6 fails all three Buy a banger and rag the ass of it. Stop the constant analysis, let your hair down and have some fun. No hair!

Howard I am guessing you do not need my advice but here goes.
You need two or more cars.
I would suggest a Caterham as it will give you more performance than you can use on the road, a soft top and reasonable comfort on a short trip if you pick the right car. It also allows tinkering and upgrading. It is also better round a track than an Elise for the same power. It is unlightly to loose money. Currently I own two a Supersport and a race R310 both of which are great fun.
As for a second car I would suggest a Porsche Boxter GTS with the flat six (it is not as quick as the turbos but the sound track is fantastic and not a lot of difference in performance). It even should hold its value better. Although it has driver aids it allows you to turn them down, so the car can be drifted and is a lot of fun to drive near the edge. It is reliable, comfortable and there are few negatives.
That said both cars do not deliver what you clearly need; bragging right on TalkMorgan. But that is a whole different issue.

It must be great to be in such a position to be able to swap and change but I do feel sorry for your missus. When you get to my end of the life span you have three choices. Leave it for the kids, leave it for the government, or enjoy wasting some of what you have worked hard to accumulate. I've dealt with the first option, the second is to be avoided, so I am going to enjoy doing a bit of the third choice. Why not?

I agree with Crunchie in that the solution may be two cars.
