I am trying to get my first track day in the ARP4 organised - probably Goodwood in May with BHM - but possible issues with noise limits have been flagged up.
This is unknown territory for me so am asking for any comments/usual wisdom from TM members on the following: -
1. For track days do all UK circuits have the same limits? 2. And of course related to the above do they measure in the same way? What is the test procedure and, if Goodwood do things differently, does anybody know how they measure? 3. And most importantly has anyone passed limits at Goodwood or another circuit with their ARP4?
The best solution would be for me to get down to Goodwood in advance of the track day for a quick test but its about a 300 miles round trip. So I am looking for some guidance to avoid me doing that before I make a non-refundable payment for the day.
Thanks in advance for any feedback.
Ian

I think each circuit has different sound limits depending on local council noise limits , and the test is often a drive by one on the track . I had my Mog tested at krazyhorse so it would be a good idea to ask your local Mog dealer or indie wether they can test your noise output so you have a figure before going to a track , mine was 99db's.

Ian, each circuit has its own noise limits. The noise test should be done at 3/4 revs at 1/2 metre from the exhaust at 45 degrees but in practice this often doesn’t happen. Goodwood run different noise days- you will need to check which day BHM have booked. Goodwood tends to have lower limits than other race tracks but I have booked “noisy” days there. Remember there is usually a static and drive by noise limit. Circuits like Cadwell, Snetterton and Silverstone will be easier to pass with static of 102dB and drive by of 105dB. If you’re close to the limit getting the exhaust really hot reduces noise by a few dB. It is useful to get tested in advance, but the curcuit will not pass you unless their noise test is ok. Meters and testing differ! Safest policy is to take a bolt on exhaust muffler if you are near the limit. I love Goodwood but if you come off it doesn’t take any prisoners, whereas modern circuits have more run off and gravel to save you and the car. Good luck!

Think Goodwood BHM day static test is 98db. Then if you are over/ near just be careful when passing the trackside mics- just throttle back a little or change down. My old AR throttle bodied 4/4 was always on the edge - they try to help you not go over when actually on the track by pointing out where to back off.

Morning Ian. I was at the BHM track day at Goodwood last may in my own ARP4 and the car was fine. It was a static test and I seem to recall having to rev it up a bit for their measuring but the car still came in about 2db under the limit.

98db is pretty loud and well above the level allowed for the road. Noise
The external noise emitted by passenger cars has been controlled since 1929 when the Motor Cars (Excessive Noise) regulations were introduced. New cars are now required to meet Europe-wide noise limits. These have been progressively reduced from 82 decibels (dB (A)) in 1978 to the current limit of 74 dB (A) established in 1996. This means it would take 7 new vehicles to make the same amount of noise as one vehicle that just meets the pre-1978 limits. Information on the level of noise recorded for new models of cars at their type approval test is also listed in the data table.
When looking at this information please note that off-road vehicles are allowed to be 1dB (A) louder, as are direct-injection diesels. These allowances are cumulative, so the limit for an off-road vehicle with a direct injection diesel engine is 76 dB (A).
The noise levels quoted above are the maximum levels that are permitted for new vehicle types. Many vehicles produce lower levels of noise, and it is illegal to modify the exhaust system of a vehicle to make it noisier than the level recorded for that model at type approval.
A new EU regulation is being introduced from July 2016, Regulation (EU) No 540/2014, which will phase in tighter noise limits over 10 years, together with a revised, more representative test procedure. By 2026 the limit for most new passenger cars will be 68 dB(A).

Why not check directly with BHM ? I don't know what concessions are given to the big events at Goodwood (Members Meeting, Revival), but some of the machines used then must be pretty rorty.

I have access to a calibrated exhaust noise meter, if you wanted to meet up at Cain's I could measure your level it if would help.

It’s a track day, there are only two static noise limits. Races run under different noise limits. For track days these are either 98dB or 105dB static. I suspect the BHM day is 98dB but check with Sarah at BHM.
