Well done. When we came back from Kenya to Holland I had an Indian Enfield Bullet 350 that was 3 months old.
When I tried to register it I was told as it was under 6 months old I must be a car importer & as the model was not registered in Holland that would be €10k please. I suggested I scrapped it or didn't register it, no dice it was imported please pay. They could do nothing as it was EU rules.
Having driven from Den Haag to Utrecht for an appeal the guy in charge of the department appeared. He was retiring that week but had had an Enfield Bullet in the 50s. Appeal accepted.

Clive,
I was going to register my M3W in France but reading threads like this made me decide I could not cope with the aggro. The French invented bureaucracy and they never let you forget it. Because the M3W only has 2 cylinders, it would attract a higher registration tax rate than if it had 4 or 6 cylinders and no I don't understand it either. It would be around €1,000 to register an M3W and then insurance in France is considerably higher cost than the UK.
<snip>
Wilson Have a chat with Raphael, atalante83 on TM. He has an M3W and an Anniversary 4/4 that were both originally registered outside of France. I think that if you have a copy of the Certificate of Conformity (CoC) it should not be a problem. PS. If you are keeping the M3W in France be careful that you don't run into legal problems with insurance etc. If the local plod gets to know you may have problems, particularly post Brexit where we still have no idea what rules will apply.

Cars built after 1999 should have full EU conformity,as MMC filed that. This should apply to new M3W. The problem with mine was that it was 1993 conformed to EU, but never filed. I have never discovered how the French Morgan agent registered their new imports that were identical to mine, although of course there would have been tax and VAT paid on a new vehicle.

The French just ignore a lot of the bureaucracy. I received a 10 page form to fill in about my septic tank. I asked the advice of the local builder and he said just to throw the form away or else the mairie (who in a French village is only marginally inferior to god) would insist that the whole thing is replaced, no matter how well it currently works or how well it has been serviced, emptied, cleaned etc. The new one would be at a cost of around €10,000 plus it uses electricity, which my current one doesn't.

Back in 1991 we moved to Germany with out 1986 Alfa 33 Green Cloverleaf. Registration, with the V5 and CoC took about 30 mins at the local Vehicle Registration Office.
In 1999 we returned, with a 1997 Mercedes E200 Estate. Again registration here in the UK was painless, it was issued with an age related number plate.
In 2002 my pal Colin moved to Brussels for a 3 year posting. He took his UK specification BMW RT bike. Registration was a nightmare, involving BMW UK, BMW Munich and the BMW distributor in Belgium. The process took 6 months and cost 20% of the bike cost.
So why do some countries make such a fuss when others don't? In essence the EU Rules are the same, it is just local interpretation that varies...

Thanks for all your comments. To pick up on some of them. Our French friends and people I have met at the Prefecture, all French, are just as frustrated. The system is at fault, and as some of you have said, the rules are interpreted in different ways in different departments. My wife sums this up as "you have to be wearing the right colour knickers for the day"
We know of a French couple who took their 1992 4/4 to Montlhery for inspection that took the best part of a day, a drive of 400 miles. The car failed on exhaust noise, and they charged them 1600 €. They fixed it,returned,it passed, and they tried to charge them another 1600€. We were lucky not to be sent to the central test centre at Montlhery.
The easier cars are those after 1998 as MMC filed the correct EU conformity info, and can issue an acceptable certificate of conformity.
It is becoming more difficult, as the system has changed. It is all online, operated by an outsourcing company.
I hope I have responded to most of your comments. We and our French friends still enjoy living here, even though there are times when we have to question our sanity. A bit like owning a Morgan? Have fun Clive
