I found this on the web What are the symptoms of a bad mass air flow sensor? Here are some of the most common symptoms of a faulty mass airflow sensor: •The engine is very hard to start or turn over. •The engine stalls shortly after starting. •The engine hesitates or drags while under load or idle. •Hesitation and jerking during acceleration. Plenty of options for product on the web https://www.amazon.co.uk/s/?ie=UTF8&...sl_5aynd2eo83_e

I had similar problems with Aldermog that were traced to the mass flow sensor. I tried a number of spray cleaners, in the end I replaced the sensor. It wasn't silly money, because it is a Ford part I'll bet the BMW/Bosche equivalent is more costly.

Gents, lots of options to explore, the MAF seems a likely culprit. I just wonder why rolling the car forward a few inches, in gear, enabled a start to be achieved, hence my query on the camshaft or crankshaft sensor - the learned forum does not seem to agree with that, which is good as that would be a job to replace. Does anyone know the part number for the S1 MAF? - as if I strip out the old one to clean it, I might as well just replace it as the part itself is not terribly expensive. Thanks again for all of your advice so far

Thanks again for all of your advice so far I think rocking it in gear is far more likely to be vibrating/moving a poor electrical connection than anything else. The sensors you mention won't really change state with that little movement in 6th gear I wouldn't have thought.

The Maf only applies to the cutting out, not the starting. This is a different issue. Aerotaff - Em.

My first thought was also intermittent electric connection. Check/rotate the fuses and relays in the gadget box under the bonnet ?
Everyone loves a Morgan. Even me, unless it's broken again.

James, My car has an Odyssey PC925 battery (age unknown, but I've had the car 18 months), & a Ctek permanently hooked up. I think I'll buy a new battery anyway, & take your advice re the charging regime. I'll also try some MAF cleaner, as the MAF seems not so easily or cheaply available &, on reflection, the cleaner is worth a try first. Will also check fuse & wiring connections
Re the battery, some people recommend a Tayna Red Flash 750, others the Odessey PC925 (Extreme?). Any views here either way?

I was told the MAF is off a Vauxhall Cavalier (!). Worth cross referencing part numbers........
