I have read all the foregoing with some interest but I admit to a total lack of understanding with most of the jargon!!
As I only use my lap top to talk to you lot plus surf the net, do I really need to worry about the Russians?
I feel they would be sorely disappointed if they found their way into my electronic world!! If that is literally all you do on your laptop, then I cant see what you have to protect. The Russians could get into your lappy and do the Volga Boat song without you losing anything much. Its a bit like me leaving the house unlocked - burglars are more likely to leave me something out of sympathy. Thanks Howard, I can now sleep at night unless the KGB come around at 03.00 hrs.

Yes it does help Alistair and thanks for taking the time to do so. At the moment I use a portable HDD and windows back up - just did it this morning as it happens. Plus there are key documents in the cloud. What I have never found out how to do is to create a mirror to allow me to replace a failed PC more easily. I dont know how important it is TBH since I never buy a PC without getting a systems disk so if the PC goes t*ts up, it may take me a while to re-install aoftware but I have it available on DVD, and I have data available from my backup. Does that make sense for a retired individual with just bank accounts and brokers etc to worry about? Does that help ? As for backup you may wish to look at MS Windows Storage Spaces function as this allows replication of content to physically different devices including across a LAN I believe. Somebody Earlier in this thread said"If you are running Windows 10, the stock Microsoft Windows Defender is fine. Otherwise go for Malwarebyte".
Never used Defender but I know from magazine tests and experience of a mate who only had that and got a major problem that Defender is only OK until you get a full blown Virus Prog. I recommend NOT to rely on Defender.
I use Norton and its been excellent. I do run Malware malbytes but with Norton working its never found anything.
Another comment about hardware (routers, cameras and stuff) their passwords - often the company generate a password based on the unit MAC address or serial number. So they may seem secure but I believe there are programmes on the black market that can back calculate to password from that data. So as has been said always change passwords to your own - and don't use Letmein123 :-).
I have to say I worked for a large aerospace corporation and they were a target but I cant believe joe public is of any interest except to scam your money.
Better safe that sorry and a useful thread...
