When in a foreign country, obey the law.
(... and when at home do not violate traffic regulations either)

I think it is absolutely positive that penalties do not only apply to the locals but to foreigners too.
We had many incidents when drivers of neighboring countries were simply ignoring traffic regulations. Since they get their speeding tickets sent home, things have changed much to the better.

Couldn't agree more but of course none of us are infallible!
My beef, and it may just be a problem of perception, is that foreigners in the UK get away with it whilst Britons abroad get jumped on from a great height with considerable zeal!

We have just got beyond the 1 year period from our trip around Europe last year. I thought there might be a couple of risky moments in Italy when I had been in traffic and noticed it was a good 20kph above the limit. They had a lot of average speed cameras which are annoying when it's totally clear.

On the Autostrada it is not unusual for the traffic in the fast lane to be travelling at 150kph (20kph above the limit). The average speed camera system, called Tutor, is controlled from a cental operations room and is not always active in all zones. It does not cover the whole Autostrada network but there a sections covered that have had a high incidence of speed related crashes. Sometimes the sections can be quite long perhaps as much as 50 km with cameras every 5 km or so. Often a warning will be displayed on overhead notification panels when it is in operation. Most are in areas of 130kph limit but some, such as on the curvey sections decending towards Genoa on the A7, are on zones with lower limits such as 80kph.

There is a law in place that would allow the raising of the speed limit to 150kph in sections of 3 lanes, plus a breakdown lane, plus the tutor system. It is up to the Autostrada management to request the increase of the limit but so far none have done so.

I have absolutely no idea whether or not the Italian authorities would pursue a speeding infringment on a UK plated car. From my own experience I know that the Swiss will very quickly and efficiently send a fine to the owner of an Italian plated car

Peter, I was in Ortigia (Sicily) last year and fell foul of driving restrictions on the island and ended up being pursued by the italian authorities for about £350.

For sake of clarity my friend was done on the autobahn. Going from an unrestricted into a 100 kmh section with signage obscured by heavy traffic. Switzerland, my experience is the police/border officials always check whether the car has any historic fines. Four years ago I was on a 7 day multi mountain pass Alpine Trip with 911 Turbos/GT3s, Astons, and various other tuned exotica.The Swiss police shadowed us for most of the 36 hours we spent in Switzerland.

That is because they wanted to make sure that your cars were safe and not stolen....
