I use black and silver on Nero.....old non age related plate but 2009 car. I’ve always hoped that unless the police had to check the car for any reason, that it would be just seen as an old car. I keep the original reflective plates in the car just in case but now that you can get points rather than just a fine, I’m beginning to think that ditching the black and silver might not be a bad idea.

We've done this to death in the past, but my biggest concern is that the reflective plate on the back improves visibility massively in the dark.
A Morgan with non reflective plates and two tiny round red lights set low down is lost amongst traffic on busy motorways in the dark. I followed one once on the M42 and it was almost invisible. Totally agree on the visibility Dave. A similar incident caused me to bin the black and silver plates that I had used occasionally.

I didn't realize you could get points now .
I used to have a small motorcycle black and silver plate on the back of my three-wheeler (and nothing on the front ) . I got chatting to traffic police a couple of times while filling up with petrol , they knew it was a newish car but didn't mention the plate .
Also got caught speeding and not mentioned .

Dave, I agree. It is like removing the 3rd brake light. I get the "look" idea but anything that stops the brain dead from seeing my low dark car is worth it. If you like old plates why not add them at rallies etc. John

I don't know for sure but the UK must be unique in the world that people are able to have their own plates made. Everywhere else you have to carry the government issued plates. In that case usually classic plates stay with the car but if they are replaced for any reason they are replaced with modern plates. Some places will reissue classic plates as personalised plates, but even that is rare. If people are willing to pay for their vanity it is only right and just that the Government relieves them of their cash for the privilege  . Budster - your point on safety and visibility is a very wise one  .

Pre 1973 for non reflective (black and white) plates. Bit of poetic licence from the Malvern cops, it is £100 NO points, misrepresenting number plate. Worth remembering you may well get reported to the DVLA 3 X reported they will withdraw the plate and issue the vehicle with a relevant year plate if it was a cherished transfer.

Apologies if subject been done to death. As a keen newish member of forum I was unaware that it’s all been said before.
I knew what I was doing when I put plates on and took the experience with a smile on my face and a gained a little tale to tell.
