You can also get black and reflective silver stick on vinyl plates (helps with visibility).

I don't know for sure but the UK must be unique in the world that people are able to have their own plates made. Everywhere else you have to carry the government issued plates. In that case usually classic plates stay with the car but if they are replaced for any reason they are replaced with modern plates. Some places will reissue classic plates as personalised plates, but even that is rare. Americans certainly can have " vanity" plates and I am sure it's possible elsewhere. . Why not? I watched an auction recently when one plate sold for 75 k euro and many were above 10 k. I'd like to think that it reduced my tax bill but somehow I doubt it.

My point was not really the availability or not of personalised or vanity plates. My point was that in most places you can't get the plate made yourself, even vanity plates are ordered through the competent authority.
If you can order or make your own plate who is going to check if it is valid or not, let alone in compliance with the correct standard?
If everyone can make their own how many plates are fitted to a car they don't belong to. I am sure there are people out there that have more than one car or bike sporting the same plate. At least a plate issued by the authority reduces casual fraud. In NSW, with the exception of vanity plates, if you lose a plate they don't re-issue the same number but you get a new number with the current style of plate.

We've done this to death in the past, but my biggest concern is that the reflective plate on the back improves visibility massively in the dark.
A Morgan with non reflective plates and two tiny round red lights set low down is lost amongst traffic on busy motorways in the dark. I followed one once on the M42 and it was almost invisible. I can get them legally in WA. The "white" is reflective and I was surprised just how visable.

I like that Peter...didn't realise you could use shortened plates legally until I read Stewarts link.
Is yours the 34 cms item?
It would suit my 5 digit reg on the rear

Just measured it and it is 40cm from edge to edge. Just think, if you had a 2 digit number you could have a very small one!!
