Happy May Day to all,
I have decided it is time to update my 8 year old Garmin Nuvi.
Do not use it a lot in the Mog, but could use the updated info.
So have looked online and found the Tom Tom Start 52 5 inch, which looked good until I read the reviews!
Would welcome advice

Use a smart phone on a screen clip...Google Maps just works, there are others.

I feel that free standing sat nav devices have had their day.

I agree with Peter.

My iphone is much better than my tom tom.
With a smart phone you don’t need to connect to a computer with internet to have the maps updated either. Iphone is always updated.

That sounds good. Will test it using my wife's Iphone on a local jaunt.
We are going to the Aarhus classic weekend, Denmark in late May and want it to back up the maps.

Be careful the smartphone will probably download constantly data.
So no signal = no directions.
Lots of data = lots of money depending upon your plan.

The Mapsme app can work off line on a phone.

You would be stuck down here using your phone as the coverage is dire - 3 satellites need to be in view for an accurate Satfix so I would go with the Satnav. I use a basic TomTom and it's about 7 years old now with free updates.

Ingres about the phone but I use a German app called Here which allows me to download the fill.maps at home over WiFi and save to the phones memory. What's more it's free and it works at least as well as the Garmin O have for the bike. Gives speed limit warnings too.

You have nothing to.lpse by downloading it and trying it out. Interestingly it's the same company that supplied the map data to Jaguar for the F type satnav

I may be old fashioned but I think there is a role for both.

As far as traffic goes , my smartphone loaded with Waze is vastly superior to my SatrNav. Just today I ran both in parallel as an experiment. The Garmin predicted an arrival time of 13.02 for a tortuous cross London route of about 1 hour. The Garmin gave a time of 13.29! I actually arrived in 13.03 which I reckon was pretty good.

However if I want to start a journey in an area where is no phone reception (say middle of Exmoor) then the Garmin 2599 will pick up satellites in a minute or so , lock on , and I am away. I wouldn't want to rely on only one system.

I can't speak for an Apple phone, but on Android google maps will download maps in advance, which saves on mobile data.

Herewego (was Nokia's maps, then bought by a consortium of car companies) also has offline capabilities.

Waze also has an offline/ map download facility, and lets you report & see reports from fellow motorists... accidents, jams, cops etc... if you're online.

If there's no signal, you'd lose live updates - but then the chances are that where there's no signal you're remote enough that there's no traffic!
