Well, I once had a pair of shoes that leaked water once, but it doesn't mean all Clarks are rubbish.. Shoes aren’t great for carrying water Try a bucket next time But not the one that a song was written about.

I have often been called a police informer The name originated from a certain TM member who tends to lurk here a lot. I was a civvy in our Ops Room where calls came in...all types.... Does it worry me? No......but the TMer should....hehe!

I seem top remember last century one of the Continental European +8 owners had his rear plate mounted with piano hinges attached to a string by his steering wheel. Now that's naughty. A Swiss motorcycle rider was recently arrested in Spain for that trick. For some reason he did not think it a fair cop

In which case, it's not the Police then, Howard..!
The word 'speed trap' harks back to the days when motor cars were still new. I hardly think a fluorescent yellow box on a pole is a 'trap' nor indeed is a white van with livery on..
Just to come back to the Enid Blyton character for a moment, the term refers to that person and that person only. To use the term in a generic way, usually with some sort of emphasis is lampooning anyone that is in the Police and, as many have said, disrespectful.
Why don't you simply say 'the Police'..? You don't have to describe them in any other way unless (a) you have an axe to grind, or (b) you have a baseball cap on backwards and wear a hoodie..! There is a basis for an interesting discussion of semantics here, but having no better access than a small phone and stubby fingers, I can't do it justice. I have a nick name habit. As a child my parents weren't mum an dad - they were fatty and fanny. And I loved them to bits. All the teachers at school were known by their nicknames as we're all my pals and indeed myself. Currently all the cars have nicknames as does the boat and I can't think of when I.last addressed my wife by her Christian name. I guess there's a pattern and from what I see on here it isn't unique. Respect doesn't come with a job title. It has to be earned. Or so it seems to me. And IMO there are no greater sins than taking yourself or life too seriously. So I shall continue to use nick names for anything and everything including all varieties of officialdom from Brands downwards. What's your name by the way?

Hmm.. Respect for a role is different from a job title in my eyes. I work on the basis that you have to be a certain character to offer yourself up to be everyone's focus, and public service doesn't mean public servant. The Police in particular are servants of the crown, and as such do deserve a level of support.
Within any organisation there are those who fail to meet the role expectations, and as with Arwyn's post, things don't always go as people expect. That's just life, but unlike many private organisations the emergency services (and now, so do the medical profession and educationalists) there are ways of redressing these issues.
I watch the actions of corrupt countries where the actions of those people you turn to in absolute need fail to do what is needed, instead doing what either makes them money or what they are frightened to do for fear of punishment, and thank my lucky stars that I live in such a respectful and honest society such as this.
I just feel that we need to support the protectors, despite the odd fall out such as getting pinged for speeding or black plates, or indeed not doing what someone wants them to do, because without them we'd be in a far more serious and corrupt position.
In my experience, making names up for people is a very divisive thing. It's almost always relevant to something they have done, or how they look, and it's one thing having pet names between family members, but quite another to use those names to mock.
It's a very fine line between having a nick name and the power to use that to ridicule and that says everything in my eyes..

Not in the UK admittedly but I think "Speed trap" is quite appropriate for this one. It has every appearance of being out of the built up area with fields on the right and a fence along most of the left side of the road. The camera unit was hidden behind a small roadside building that probably has something to do with road maintenance or electric power. No other buildings front the road on this stretch and there is clear vision till the next curve about a kilometre away. I thought I was out of the 50 kph speed limit zone but in fact it ends just around the next bend for no apparent reason. On the left side of the road is a train line and I'll bet the trains travel at more than 50kph through there. That red flash cost me 120 Swiss Francs
