As some of you have commented on Amalfi I have tried to add some of our favourite spots. It is a big and wonderful place which we have been to many times so I have had to edit a lot. If I can help please PM as needed.

A Mini guide to the Amalfi Coast from our viewpoint. We don't have children and tend to travel out of peak season, we enjoy food wine and people watching just to set a baseline. Pizza we like thin and simple. In season I am certain things may become a little more fractious so I hope no one has a bad experience if they do try these. I have tried to put quite a lot in but was rushed so please excuse my irrors.

The area is Sorrento, Positano, Amalfi, Ravello and the Island of Capri.

If you like it busier then Sorrento is your best bet.
Capri is mostly a day trip, lovely but a bit of a cash cow.
Positano is quite upmarket and wonderful (our favourite)
Amalfi is small and pretty (1-2 days)
Ravello (up above) is stunning f(1-2 days) with a stunning amphitheatre/concert if you can attend.

The entire region needs good walking shoes and can be steep if you are not a good walker. The food and local wines are great.

The Amalfi costal road is narrow and the locals like to squeeze rental cars and foreign number plates so don't let them push you. There are passing places which hopefully will not be full of people taking spectacular photos so use these if you want to relax. Many of the bends are blind so leave a window down and listen for coach horns which mean "give way as I am coming". The roads busy up from 10am with tourist coaches so if you want a clear run aim for 8-9am. During the day the road is often slow going so allow for a low speed on trips.

There is a super SITA bus service that goes along the road and is cheap and regular, try and have the right change. If you want a day out from place to place this is great as parking in all these towns is very limited. You can expect them to be very friendly to Morgans and special cars so you will be treated well.

The sea bus/ferry is very good for days out. It tends to run from Sorrento and then hop along the coast and out to Capri. You can go out from Sorrento in the morning and visit Positano or Amalfi for the day then return. Book your tickets in advance by Internet to avoid the tourist prices in the booth near the jetty. You get some great photos as you come in and out of the landings at Amalfi and Positano. They are not reserved seating so during peak season be there a little early to get in the queue. Also take water and a hat as there are no stands or cover in Capri/Positano/Amalfi.

The bus and boat services can be seen here. http://www.sorrentotourism.com/en/ferry-and-jet-services.php

Sorrento
Wonderful as the largest location in the region. Good shopping. Plenty of things to see in and around town. Marina Grande is mainly accessible by foot down narrow steep paths. There is little to no parking in the Marina however several car parks on the road down just before the dock can be found. Ask firmly to park your own car and tip up front so they let you! There is a handy local bus service down there if you cannot walk far.

There is a great wine/food specialist http://www.cornershopsorrento.com/ if you want guidance on the local wines.

The bar on the top of hotel continental is rather nice and generally open to non-guests. https://www.continentalsorrento.com/

Il Marzialino is a great modern place, https://www.facebook.com/Il-Marzialino-720891691295680 It is next to the large Catholic Convent on the sea edge

Ristorante Pizzeria Tasso is one of our many favourites for Pizza, small and great. https://ristorantetasso.com/en/ https://goo.gl/maps/wNd2WNPz99M2

A general shopping area around town can be found around here. https://goo.gl/maps/xzJJg5tuEHG2

http://www.daemilia.it/ to the east end of the marina is our favourite. No bookings and don't go on sunday lunchtime as it is swamped. Just stay simple, fish of the day or a simple pasta and tomato sauce.

Positano
Positano is vertical and requires walking for most things. There is a single one-way road down to town, via Christoforo Colombo. Parking is limited to a few managed but generally careful private lots which make money! They do care for nice cars so if you leave the keys I would say you should be okay if you tip up front. It is an expensive town even for the region but some of the smaller shops selling shoes/linen and local goods are fantastic.

If you stick to pasta and pizza you cannot really go wrong. On the beach are a great range of places to eat, most are very capable. The fish of the day is literally fresh off the boat in many cases and can usually be recommended.

Our favourite is La Pergola below Hotel Buca Di Bacco. www.bucapositano.it They also do take-away if you get the nibbles. Most of the menu is great. If you need help with Italian/English then look for Leo, he is very friendly. The three sisters and Chez Black are posh and good.

Fresh fish actually arriving

At the bottom of the road into town is the petrol station and Garage Mandara. They have a cave under the garage which is cool and safe parking but not cheap if they see a foreign registration. Haggle for 2 or more days. They let me keep the Coupe just in the door to the right and move it myself. If you need a fettle see them as well. I understand that the local Ferrari club meeting is held here.

If you have forgotten anything you can get amazon.co.uk etc to deliver to the hotels and they will hold things for you if they are warned. If you are a prime member it will not be free on prime but just a standard delivery cost. There is also a mailbox shop up the hill before Garage Mandara. You could post all that spare baggage home that won't fit in the car.

From the Garage you have to walk down the narrow paths to the beach. In many cases you cannot drop your bags at the hotel door. If you have a hotel on the small walkways there is a luggage delivery (paid) service from the taxi point before the church/opposite the pharmacia.

The little yellow battery trucks will also give the elderly and infirm a ride down to save time as well. You can see one in the picture and also just past it on the right is where they wait. They usually take 15-20 mins in peak hours (and still may ask for a tip!)

If you walk down the main lane from the church on Christoforo Colombo (Piazza di Melini) there is a Banco di Napoli with a cash machine and opposite is the mini-market which provides anything like water/wine/nibbles. There is a cake shop near the bank which is wonderful for coffee and cake in the afternoon.

The local wines (Marisa Cumo) are best in white but most are very good when lightly cooled. If you want a red then do try the Taurasi from the region. Big and full bodied. We tend to live on the Prosecco I have to admit. Chilled Bottega Gold is the best celebration fizz if you can find it.

Amalfi
This is a smaller place and parking is a devil. Popular for the lemons and Limoncello. You can get these in most of the regional supermarkets much more cheaply. The church is beautiful and my M-i-L was once one of the vestal whatsits that stood on the steps for weddings. Anyone marrying here is blessed.

If you are staying in Positano or Sorrento then come in on the water taxi. Spend the main part of a day here and go back in the evening light. There are a lot of good places to eat and drink. The drive from Sorrento to Amalfi on the coastal road in busy times can be up to 90-110 minutes.

Ravello
This is up above Amalfi in the hills and has a beautiful tranquil style. It is a fair drive up there but worth a days visit.

Some excellent places to eat and a natural style amphitheatre for concerts. On a nice evening you could be in heaven watching a concert here. It does however have about 200 steps to get into it. http://www.ravelloarts.org/

Villa Rufolo have beautiful gardens and the smells are quite enchanting.
https://www.tripadvisor.co.uk/Attraction...t_Campania.html

Mimi bar and pizza is a simple and great place to eat. http://www.mimiravello.com/
Babel - Bar, Food and Art in one place - different and good food - https://www.facebook.com/Babel-Wine-Bar-Deli-Art-772771126117764

Furore
This is a small town near to Amalfi and Ravello and if you are going this way it is worth taking a tour of one of the many local wine makers. Our favourite is Marisa Cuomo http://www.marisacuomo.com/

This signpost can be found on the way laugh

Capri
This is a boat trip from Positano or Sorrento, book ahead to save quite a bit for the rides and trip out. Do not miss your boat as they turn around quickly like a taxi.

When you arrive you have two/three things to see. The tram up the hill (or bus but this is less fun) to the main shops and sites. A boat ride over to the Blue Grotto. Prepare your wallet in advance! You pay for the boat from the main harbour 20 mins to the grotto. You pay to go in the gondola in order to squeeze into the grotto. You then pay for the grotto itself. Then there is the obligatory tip the gondola drivers squeezes you for. You will 2 mins in the grotto so be ready with your camera and turn off your flash in advance. It is pretty until they start singing a song that just makes me think of Corneto for some reason. You can taxi to the grotto but it is a let down. The boat to gondola transfer is a bit choppy as the queue causes the water to get a bit choppy. Some of the port to grotto boats just do a short ferry, some go right around the island (about an hour more) which is a lovely experience if you have time and a good telephoto lens.

Eat Here L' Approdo - http://approdocapri.com/?
It is near to the main port area so a 5 minute walk to the ferry. This is the best pizza we had during our entire stay. Linguine Vongole was also excellent. It has a nice view of the port and they were lovely.(They also stock Bottega Gold Prosecco - Yaaaaaaa)

I hope this helps.

Beware of the roads around the centre of Pompeii. There are a lot of uneven areas and risk of damage. You could use some of the holes as paddling pools. Also a lot of main roads from Naples to Amalfi need coin payments if you head that way.

I Matti Pizzeria Ristorante is great if you get a chance. https://www.facebook.com/imattipompei/
As you go in you walk past the huge pizza oven.

The church in the centre of town is very beautiful as well.

Your advice proving invaluable Alistair, we had a great drive today along the coast road having set off early as recommended. Tonight we came into Sorrento early-ish, drinks at Bellevue Syrene (lovely location) and the dinner at Ristorante Tasso. Would never have found it without your recommendation!

Excellent food all round, huge portions - be warned TM-ers, super advice on local wines and we left back to our hotel for a nightcap; totally replete. Many thanks. 🙏
