I've just returned from trip of 2755 miles with no problems.
Strictly speaking this isn’t true - you had to hang around waiting for me to sort out problems with my Plus 4   I did not wish to impugn the integrity of your fine vehicle!

I am surprised by the surprise expressed. High end cars are an asset just like any other and when the market cools down, as the stats for car sales clearly shows it has, then you end up with an overhang of cars for sale at prices that dont reflect the situation. The owner isnt prepared to accept his car isnt worth what it was a year before. This glut doesnt last - a few get sold at lower prices and others on sale or return get returned, maybe to re-appear a year or two later.
Its exactly what happens with house prices when they start to top out and fall. And with boats. Its simply the nature of a market.
FWIW the prices of Ferraris have also fallen by at least 10% since the peak in late 2016. So have the prices of cars like classic E types. I was talking to the owner of a 328 Fezza a while ago - he had bought the car new for a bit over 100k only to see it fall down as far as 25k. He kept the car and it rose back to approaching 100 on the listings last year. He's now trying to sell at 85k and getting no interest.
As for a Boxter can I suggest you try the F type S. I did at first wonder if I had made a mistake buying mine but I am now pretty sure that I didnt. Its a real sports car, with excellent performance , a wonderul sound track and great handling. Far more characterful than the Boxter which I have always found to be bland to the point of boredom. Sure its not as characterful as a Plus 8 but then its half the cost and IMO a better car. And this, Howard, is I suspect why you don't get on with the idea of a Morgan. I suppose there are some who would consider their Mog as an "asset" or a "high end car." I - and I guess many other owners - fundamentally don't give a stuff about how much my car is worth, or how much it's appreciated or depreciated. It's there for me to enjoy, to drive, and yes, to fettle, and ultimately to pass on to the next generation of owners with more miles on the clock, more patina on the paint, and more wear on the upholstery.

Well summed up Doug, for us dyed in the wool "no hoper's" it is all about the transitory enjoyment of a National treasure during our tenure  .. If you have to think too much about ownership it's not for you, this is akin to falling in love with your partner you just can't stop yourself.

Everyone has a right to their opinion. Morgans work on different people in different ways. My ML is faster than the Coupe. Its more functional. The CL600 I had was a way better car by most sensible measures. Its gone and the Coupe (and S2 actually) still represent our hard earned money and love. I have looked at selling the S2 a dozen times and often get offers when it is parked out and about but it will not happen as we love the cars. Then what happens below makes me realise I would not swap it for almost anything. I cannot say how proud I was on arriving in Monaco as part of our once in a lifetime rumble around Europe. We were waved straight past the front guard, he actually clapped the car as we passed. On arriving at the hotel the porters all had that "wow" look. The F12TdF which was parked on prime spot got moved once we had unloaded and the Coupe was given the spot at the bottom of the steps. In the middle of supercar square the Morgan apparently had more photos taken than almost any other car the porters team had seen. Each day they moved it back to their underground car park in the evening and bought it out in the morning. We have some lovely video of it. Then the little s_d decided to dump it's air-conditioning compressor but we won't go there.     For everything else there is Mastercard.

My two-pennyworth.
Morgans are an emotional purchase and make little logical sense. Like Alistair I simply love driving the Plus 8. That is probably an appreciating asset means nothing to me, but it might to my executor of my estate!
Why are Morgan's so expensive? Because Morgan uses the catalogue price to manage the demand, they make 700 or so cars a year and are uninterested in making more. So it is logical to produce the most profitable models they can. Special Editions help this process. The 50 "run out" Plus 8s are expensive, and will probably all be sold by next year.
Next year will be interesting, there will be a new drivetrain for the Aero, quite what remains to be seen.

Many on here couldnt give a stuff about there Mog being an asset or not. For me my Morgan was the biggest outright purchase I have ever made (other than our home) so having a none depreciating car made perfect sense, incase I ever had to sell......
Then again, now after 1 years of ownership...........I don’t think I could ever let her go .......

Then again, now after 1 years of ownership...........I don’t think I could ever let her go ....... I said that 5yrs ago now I'm not so sure

I agree Jezz. After one year's ownership I can't see myself wanting to sell, I'm thinking more that it'll need a rebuild in 10 years or so, especially since there are already small areas of corrosion in all the normal places.
If I then spend £10-£15k on a rebuild I should think the car will then fetch pretty much what I paid for it, (£15k? I hope it won't cost that much).
Good reason for having a classic, I think; if I consider the rebuild cost to equate to depreciation, I'll have paid the depreciation but I'll still have a valuable car. And with Big Brother trying to outlaw IC cars, I hope the existing population of cars will all appreciate.
Not so with my ordinary car. That money has already gone up the chimney.
However, who knows if the novelty will wear off or not?
