Why not just change the final drive ratio ?
Go for acceleration rather than top speed.
I have a 2 litre Silver Top built by Dunnell Engines pushing 180 bhp on twin 45 webers.
All the brakes and suspension have been uprated.
The gearbox has sprint ratios making it quick off the line and mid range acceleration.
I have had it up to 110 mph but my common sense says slow down !

I have just had a new Omex 600 ECU installed by Williams Automobiles with the wiring and set up and this has totally transformed our 2001 1.8 Blacktop Zetec.

No more flat spot and a totally smoother and more progressive accelaration. It also seems quieter at cruising speeds which is surprising as we have a side exit librands exhaust just like the 80th anniversary model. It still sound great just not as noisy at the cruising pace.

We only had this work completed this week but so far it is amazing. We really would recommend the team at Williams and can appreciate the work they have been involved in with Omex.

Wouldn't it achieve the same thing to drive around one gear lower? Just use 5th for m'way cruising. Save a packet too. (But not in fuel obviously!)

Not really, you would drive with higher revs using a gear lower but the revs would keep much „longer“ with a longer final drive ratio.

Hi Steve,

Your first post, welcome on board.

If you go back in this thread, I posted what I had done with my Silvertop and I absolutely agree with you about the benefits.

I did my own installation and then had 3 hours on a Dyno to fine tune the setup.

Did Williams Dyno it for you and if so, what was the output?

Did they remove the MAF meter?

Where are you based.

I have been planning to drop a 2L Blacktop in mine and I'd love to have a look at your installation.

PM if you prefer.

I still think it's a shame that Kevin Vernon stopped offering his Ecotec engine conversion. It used a GM/Opel Z18XER engine as fitted to the Astra and Zafira, but with an MBE ECU.

The engine is a peach, very light and compact, and features variable valve timing and variable-length inlet tract. The original spec gives 140bhp from 1800cc, but the MBE ECU takes that to around 165bhp with no other mods. Torque is around 150ft-lb

The really neat thing is that with these engines the catalytic converter is integrated into the exhaust manifold, so it heats up very quickly and enables a really neat installation into the Morgan engine bay - the only engine mods required are a different bracket for the accessory belt tensioner and a metal cover for the electrics above the injectors.

My car was one of the five or so that Kevin did, and over the last 10 years and 40k miles I've been delighted with it.

It is a bit of a drive for us to get to Williams as we live in Norfolk but the drive back was certainly more fun and worth the trip. I left it with them for a couple of days and just asked that it was set up for everyday use as we do not race. I am sure Henry or Tony would be able to assist with the technical detail, but it does have an omex sensor unit near the air filter and the box of tricks near the fuse box. It is a really neat job and you can guess from my response that you are certainly more knowledgable with the spanners than myself. If you are nearby you can certainly view the installation.

Thanks Steve,

My cousin lives in Holt so I might get over that way and I'd love to take a look at the Williams installation when I do.

How about posting a photo of the installation?
