It's that time of year again I really wasn't amused by the renewal which came through from my current company, but it appears they are actually pretty competitive despite loading my premium by nearly 90% And that's with limited mileage and a stupidly high excess.

So, for various reasons, I know next year I won't be able to do many miles in the Mog so I'm contemplating SORNing the car. However if the car gets stolen whilst uninsured, I'm assuming that it won't be covered by anything? (I can't see my house insurance covering it somehow ). Is there such a thing as zero-mileage car insurance? I don't want to take the risk of not having any cover for the car however I also don't want to be paying over a grand for insurance on a car which won't move...

Have you or your car become a bigger risk or is it that premiums are just rising faster that normal. I renewed a Roadster in June with Gott and Wynn for premium very similar to 09. I did note that new Aero's were expected to have Tracker with some companies, they are clearly more attractive to thieves and joyriders etc. As regards leaving it uninsured, you could make it more difficult to steal in the garage by removing the wheels, probably good for the life of the tyres.

You need to check the current legislation, because there was talk of introducing compulsory insurance even for laid up cars as part of the insurance bureau computer database. I'm not sure if it was brought in though. For many years I cashed in the road tax over winter and put the MGB on laid up cover, but in the end I became fed up with the hassle and left it taxed & insured. Mind you, the premium was only £140 at that time.

They say that the best way to justify expensive clothes is to assess them on a 'Cost per Outing' basis by dividing the expense by the number of times worn.
Your MOG must surely be a lower cost per outing/mile than the average Outfit or Handbag measured over the piece, so just keep it T&I'd and then use it as often and for as long as you can.

Oh, and try Brunel Insurance brokers (in London) run by a fellow petrol head and recommended to me by a couple of TM'ers. Not sure they will be any better than what you have but worth a try. They cover my Morgan (& 2 other cars) for me and have been quite competitive and less hassle than most.

Quite why someone with a vehicle who's parts are scattered around a workshop as a 20 year restoration should have to insure it is beyond me.
Just shows none of the idiots in Westminster (nor some other organisations) hve any basis in the real world... But then we've known that for a very long time!

Maybe I should explain One of the main reasons for wanting to SORN the car is I'm expecting my first child early next year and I'm struggling to drive the Mog at the moment as it is. There won't be enough room for 3 of us (the OH and I always go out in the Morgan together, never separately) so I really don't foresee us doing many miles therefore it makes most sense to SORN for a year. The insurance was the final nail really particularly given that if I do have a prang, my excess would be over a grand which I personally feel is ridiculous.

Thank you all for the suggestions though - I'll look for someone who can offer me fire & theft I think. My main problem is that being under 30, most specialists won't quote me so I'm stuck with all the usual high street suspects - looks like I'll be in for a lot of ringing around over the next few weeks

My OH actually did me a little "cost per mile" analysis the other day (excluding insurance & road tax) and my reaction was I'd just really rather not know in future
