Guys -- Just remember that the majority of the trouble caused in Ireland by the travellers are by travellers who "live" in Essex and other sites in the UK and come over here for the summer when they steal anything not screwed down and then try and sell the goods at town markets. when the summer is over they then return to claim their benefits from Essex Co Co for the Winter "season"

I'm all for a set of people having a "culture" so long as that is not outside the law. Until they learn to keep the laws all others live by they will continue to have my scorn -- increased a fortnight ago when they cleaned out my garage of Lawnmower, chainsaw wood chipper and golf clubs!!!!

No One that I know of classes this lot as Irish!!!!

Here in Essex we have a dedicated team to deal with unauthorised encampments, Hare coursing, vehicle theft etc. We are not shy of entering sites to recover stolen vehicles etc. I have recovered a number of stolen vehicles recently, (usually Tracker activations). Contrary to popular misconceptions we do not ignore complaints about "Travellers" however I cannot speak for other forces.

That is interesting. I would love to see the figures of officers you need to make a recovery?
I know that if there is a prenant woman on site you have to tread carefully and bring a phycologist in assess the impact on her!


Funny just read a report the Essex to busy to visit a theft of furniture when the warehouse had video footage of the thieves

spokesman added that Essex Police receives about 650 emergency calls every day, in addition to about 900 calls on the non-emergency number, and the cases are ranked by priority.
Not sure if you are a serving officer but the reports say different!

The truth is, there's no answer to the thread. They are, have been & always will be a pain. In fact they'd steal your thoughts if you stood still long enough.

Regarding caravans, one recovery/identification tip is to put your postcode in three foot high digits on the roof. Unseen from the ground, but not from the air or bridges..

To you and I Steve and probably everyone on the forum it makes sense, all caravan windows are now also etched i think but if a pikey really wants it will go.

3 double crewed cars would be normal, no we don't need a phycologist to accompany us. It is true we are short staffed and struggle some days to meet our response times. The incident with the furniture warehouse probably did not warrant an emergency response and would have been followed up later, different if the thieves were still on scene. Yes calls are ranked by priority, some are an emergency and some can be dealt with slow time and yes I am a serving officer.

I worked as a civvy in our force Ops Room...we took all calls....101 and 999 and logged/managed/passed on/advised as necessary.
In my home town we have a long established site with many families having been there for decades. The older families tended to be OK. The problems seemed to occur with visitors/younger members. We had liaison officers who tended to deal with issues re the site and in general things were OK.
however, in many areas we covered ( approx. 2/3 of Wales and largely rural)things were different. Illegal encroachment onto land with local increases in crimes. One problem was with travellers making cold calls in their vans to remote properties like farms. Ostensibly offering goods for sale...generators/Stihl saws (usually fakes). Often this was an excuse to case the property. Farmers reported the van occupants taking liberties to walk round looking at the site.
The farmers were setting up local networks to warn each other/report incidents/vehicle details etc. The only real way due to the rural nature we covered.
Builth Wells had annual problems during Show times....fields being taken over etc..
