Whilst still working for the Ministry and carrying out compliance visits all over the SW of England I called in on one of our customers to check livestock numbers, welfare etc.

The lady of the farm kept laying hens very successfully having been given 6 as a Birthday present from her partner they had grown into a 1,000 bird flock in the space of 5 years. I asked her where the hens were and she replied bloody gypsies, apparently they had come just before dusk and filled a car boot with birds just as her partner was going to shut the birds away for the evening. He got sight of the registration and called the police on his mobile directly and 15 minutes later the police asked him to collect the birds from the cells. After a week or so she could hear and see a cockerel in action in the field and one by one the birds stopped laying and fell ill. The vet was called in and swabbed a few birds and the Cock and he had infected them all with Herpes, so the gypsies had put the infected Cock in the field knowing full well the outcome. After the birds had been culled they had an anonymous phone call asking how the hens were - now that's pure evil that kind of planned suffering.
