Simon,
I sent my car to Brian Millers and he did the starter motor change for me. The heat soak in that bonnet must damage it in some way. Incidently he goes in from the side of the engine to get it out.
However a couple of years later the clicking returned, it always started but was preceded by a number of clicks. Batteries were replaced, usually about 1 a year, I have had a few. I always issolated the battery to stop any drain. Ctec chargers did not help save them. I bought a carcoon to keep moisture out of the equation.
I have had my specialist look at connections and electrics and nothing looks wrong. I just live with it and it so far has not let me down. I am convinced the high temperatures must be cooking the batteries but fortunately a new battery always seems to keep the clicking away.

Has anyone ever considered the possibility of relocating the battery to test this theory? Is there room anywhere at the rear of the car?

Well, cleaned up the terminals (which are removable did you know?) and made sure uverything was as tight as could be. Then plugged in the trickle charger which showed green so fully charged.
Can’t try the car as I’ve locked myself out of the house!

As regards heat soak, I would guess after a run, it may be prudent to pop the battery-side bonnet upon to help dissipate heat when returning home to the garage.......will try and do this, I suppose every little helps.

Indeed, a topic that's a continual source of interest and debate.
Mentioned before on here that I also changed my starter motor, and yes it is a pig of a job the first time, yet less than 1yr later with a nearly new battery the clicking returned.
Coincidentally spoke to a mate of mine could of nts ago who's had his S1 Aero since new. Conversation was about correct way to fit the centre-lock wheels (another big topic). He did though tell me as an aside that ever since putting a de-humidifier in his garage nearly three years ago he hasn't had a single starter click!

Cheers

OK, after getting access to the keys when my good lady came home, I got into the garage to try the car. No clicking at all. Started several times first time. It could of course just be coincidence..........
