I suggest checking the integrity of the earth strap to the engine block.

Not too sure on the details as never had this mod. done.... confused2

It sounds a little drastic but, apparently ,it cut the time/cost involved significantly.I think Millers also fitted a much better starter (Bosch ?) to avoid future problems.

I did investigate this a few years back and was going to book the car in for a service (despite the distance involved!) but it was around the time the business changed hands as Brian (?) retired.

Maybe someone who has had this done could comment.....

James

I spoke to Brian last night about this; he confirmed he always fitted new Bosch starter motors & said that the change had to be done from underneath on a lift. His own S1 has had 3 starters so far, the problems are basically the heat under the bonnet & where the starter is positioned.

Although Brian & Anne retired/sold the business it is still run by the same mechanics who are well capable of changing the starter, about 3 hours labour.

Hope this helps.

Dave

Based on Brian's advise I also fitted a new Bosch starter motor, and agree that access is a pig the first time.

Not sure though that I'm convinced that heat is affecting the starter motors. As mentioned before friend who's used a humidifier in his garage for last three years doesn't get any click since it's use. This would suggest it's more humidity than heat causing the issue no?

Cheers

As a matter of interest do the beamers to which these engines are ordinarily fitted suffer such problems ? does anybody know ?

No problems at all Richard it all has to do with the heat build up which is quite intense on the early cars, you could fry an egg on the ally fuse box 5mins after shut down.

Thanks Em, I just wondered if it could shed some extra light on the subject but you boys have already been there.

That sounds pretty damn hot I'll bet those fuses are deteriorating/ageing fast.

Might have been a bit ott with my discription Richard but it does get extreemly hot. When i bought my first series 1from the Factory it was sold as seen no warranty,I arrived home with hardly any oil pressure on idle and a glowing furnace of an engine .Got on the blower straight away to be told all the oil gauges on the series1 were the same, full pressure whilst motoring and drops off dramatic on tickover. The heat from the engine was also normal They all do that sir.I must admit my fan has never come on but plenty of KLICKS...
